Marshall MS-2 sounds unbeliavable great through an external speaker. Hear this:

But I don't like it on it's own.

And here is Vox Amplug AC-30 through the same speaker, straight from headphones out. Sparkling sound, and YES, it drives an external speaker!!!
(check the second part of the video...)

I haven't read the other posts so please forgive me if I'm being redundant...and if the OP already made a purchase, please consider this as reference for others with a similar question.

For my money, my vote goes to the Roland Micro Cube. I had actually been considering a Pignose as I wanted something battery operated so I could use it around the college campus, but these little Roland's just really blew me out of the water! Not only can it work on either batteries or a wall adapter, it has a few different amp simulators, has some fairly decent built in effects including, reverb, chorus, flange, tremolo, delay, etc.. In addition, it's got an extra input jack on the back that works great with my little mp3 player (loaded with jam tracks of course!) and a headphone jack for silent practice. AND while it's small and -very- portable, it can actually get rather loud too! It's even got strap buttons so you can be the proverbial "walking concert". And yea...being a Roland, it's also VERY well built...it's a solid little beastie to say the least.

I not only use it regularly down in the studio for practice (particularly when the wife's asleep), I've had it up at the college a few times now. I just plug my little mp3 player into the back and jam away...can't wait to take it out to the beach later this summer!

Seriously...anyone in the market for a great little practice amp should really check these things out. Truly outstanding little amps!

Just my own opinion as always,
Jim

The best small amp, comparable in size to the micro cube (which I also own) it the Fender Mini Mustang, hands down. At least among the ones I've played. I have a Yamaha THR 10 waiting for me at my brother's house for my next USA visit, so don't jump on me for that!
In small amps I've got Roland micro, Rx Cube, Cube Street; Vox Mini 3 and DA-5; Yamaha something or VA-5? good for acoustic electrics.... minis include Vox AC-1, Fender Mini Twin and very good Carabao I posted earlier. Ah, in Bangkok a few weeks ago and got the Paramound GA-1 for same price as Carabao ($33 or so). About an inch bigger all around, but is new king. 9 volt powerhouse with almost too much (haha) bass. Found a vid of it, but crap connection won't let me see it! Vid is in Thai, which lucky me, I can understand most of... maybe find on ebay or someplace?
