wow thanks for the replies all
The smokey cigarette box sized one wasn't an option because nowhere around here seems to have it. Also, my friend had a honeytone and I wasn't fond of it.
From what I had previously read, the Orange Micro Crush seemed the best and that article kinda confirmed it for me.
I think I will be going for that.
I did read and appreciate all of your replies. Thankyou

The Orange is really the best "toy" amp you could get. I've had just about every type there is. Just be careful with the plastic logo on the grille. The only other problem is they're tough to find.

I had the marshall but gifted it to a friend. I had a trip to mother in law's with wife a short while back and no space in the car for my amp. So i bought the orange micro crush and played all week with it. Serious if i couldn't afford a big amp this really would do. Amazing sound with my usa standard strat. I take it to work and go where i like to play undisturbed regardless of plug socket's. Enjoy! Give us an update.

Hello Mayercaster,

I got a little Smokey amp last summer,
it really was only a novelty, but I did like it.
Seems I've misplaced it due to it's so small size.
I think I'm gonna replace it with a mini Fender tweed.
Best of luck with your choice.

Cheers.

I've got a Mini Deluxe. It's not bad, for what it is. It can get really loud for it's size. It seems though, that lately it's tone has declined. Maybe my ears are just growing more accustumed to good tone now. But it's not the worst for what it is, I promise.

for $19.99 you can get a danelectro honey tone. sounds decent for the price...

+1

The Danelectro HoneyTone is a cool little amp, and it sounds pretty good. I throw one in the suitcase when I travel.

Another vote for this one...sounds as good if not better than my older mini twin. 8)

Marshall MS-2 sounds unbeliavable great through an external speaker. Hear this:
(with a simple mod, of course...)
But I don't like it on it's own.

I run a double end male cable from the "earphone" input on my MS-4 to the "aux. in" on my Sirius boombox and the sound is just incredible.I do the same thing with my Vox Amplug AC-30 and it really has an AC-30 like tone to it.BTW-I believe that the OP had this answered long ago, according to the age of the thread.

I can understand, because these amps are just crap, unless you combine them with other equipment.

If you want to get a sound that's even close to what musicians call sound, then get a decent amp with large enough cabinet.

These micro amps are nothing but cute toys. You might as well plug your guitar into your HiFi System or your smartphone and listen via headphones. These microamps are just as bad as that.

Dunno how much of a budget you have available but either don't spend it or spend at least enough to get yourself a decent small amp.

Examples from my experiences in the past 2 years:

Vox Night Train (18W): great clean sound, acceptable distortion sound, no effects loop, no Headphones input. Switchable from 18 to 9 to 1W. I sold it!

Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister18 (18W). Awesome sound, switchable from 18 to 5 to 1 to 0W!! On 0W you can record and play silent at night with headphones. My #1 advice!!! I have it!

There's others from Marshall, Ibanez, etc....

A fantastic micro amp is the ZVEX Nano:

There's other tiny micro tube amps, search the web.
I would NEVER go below any of these because all you get is crap, at least if you are interested in getting a decent sound. Those micros you mentioned can get an acceptable clean tone with no depth but as soon as it is about crunch or distortion, you're gonna roll up your footnails!

About the best mini amp that I have come across that gives out serious tone is the Vox Mini 3 that has 11 amp models and 4 modulation effects models as well as 4 reverb and delay modes. For about $80 you get a great sounding little amp plus an AC adapter, that can run just about all day on 6 AA batteries. If you want a mini amp that doesn't sound like an old transistor radio from the 60s give the Mini 3 a good try out.We used one this summer past in a fair sized hall for a jam at a family reunion and it kept up pretty good with my Blues Jr. and wasn't drowned out but then again the B.J. wasn't being run full tilt boogie.

I've tried the Pignose and Danelectro but ended up getting a Micro Crush because of a sale at an on line site. Not bad for what it is and the built-in tuner saves bringing one along. That and my Travel guitar are what I usually bring when traveling ... it doesn't have to sound great, just good enough to practice and recognize the tunes. In line with your use, I also bring the Crush when I go over the girl friend's house -- saves lugging along one of my heavy acoustics + hard case or full amp and axe just to play a little before/after dinner. I used to spend more time setting up and then packing up than playing, so the Crush has really be nice.

I am surprised no one mentioned the Vox AC-1 (now with drum machine). I have the older model, bought 12 years ago I think. Surprisingly loud, good mids tho the plastic box does have an influence on overall sound. A hair smaller than the Mini Twin which I also have. Gain control on Vox more useful imho: Fender goes into distortion very quickly. I like clean sounds usually. Each somewhat guitar sensative. What is most fun is to put my little Pandora box ahead of those minis: can make a world of difference, and adds very very little to what you are toting. Image
The best 9 volt I have by far I got here in Thailand, Carabao Mini 9(but seen with other brandings). Vol and tone with overdrive switch (don't use). With Pandora ahead of it I think "This has no right to sound this good". Wood box covered with cork (great for dropping: just bounces and leaves no marks). Cost me $30 several years ago, maybe up to $35-40 now.

I have a few Mini-Amps, but I have to say, My favorites are as follows. My Fender Frontman 15g, and my Orange crush 12L. I also havevthe Vox Pathfinder 15 and 10 watt. All these amps are Solid State, so you can turn em on and off without waiting on the tubes to kick in, and very light and portable, with a decent sound. Any of the smaller amps, to me just sound crappy.

Well, the subject is mini amps, not small amps. When you get as big as a Mini Mustang, you are no longer in mini territory, unless there is a suburb called Maxi mini.... maybe we should start a thread on maxi minis, not over 11" on a side?

Another vote for the Smokey Amp. They're great for practicing.
