Fender acoustics were always low end, cheap sounding, and cheap feeling to me. They don't know how to make acoustic guitars, and should stop embarrasing themselves.

i feel the same way but didnt want to be so...brutal honest?

as for taylor acoustics, ive only played 2 diffrent ones for no more than 3 mins each so i cant really say a whole lot about them but i have heard they arent made very well.

i dont want to pay a lot of $$ for a guitar that is fall apart.

Washburn has been making acoustic guitars for along time and are really great instruments. I have just recently discovered them even though they have been around for a while. I would check out a Washburn. Taylor acoustics are very impressive and consistant from guitar to guitar. Gibson and Epiphone are decent as well but not my cup of tea. I have a Takamine that I bought in Japan and it is a very special guitar. I really like the Breedlove guitars as well. I think the Mahogany back and side Breedloves sound better than the Rosewood. If you are going to amplify it, Ovations are decent as well. I don't care for Ovations unless it is going through an amp. Just my 2 cents.

I have a Taylor 414CE which plays really nicley, but I 've had a hankering after a Gibson, maybe J45, don't know why. Anyone have one of those? I think seeing Paul Weller recently may be influencing me. Need to be more rational, as have no money ...

I was never much of an acoustic player - Never liked playing them because my hands are smaller, and the guitars never felt comfy - Well I found the solution several months ago - found an acoustic that is very comfortable to me, not sure, but feels like the neck is a little smaller - its a Alvarez Yairi DY 91, it has the pickup on it, amazing sounding and playing guitar!

I have an Ovation, and to tell you the truth, i like it less and less the longer I own it. It just seems to be missing something tone-wise. It's not something I can really put my finger on, specifically, just lacking somehow.

(Also I love beer, and I am assuming it will get less comfortable for me as I age!)

But back to serious, it sounds OK, better than some other guitars at that price range, but I think I need to invest in a really good acoustic. For me it just doesn't sound right.

I had an ovation. Beautiful guitar, sounded great plugged in. Unplugged it sounded like a plastic toy to me, and although I could get a good tone out of it plugged in, I never got a good "vibe" or feel off it at all. No inspiration whatsoever.

One thing I did like was the fast neck though. I could fly on that thing.

Salesman "Good choice on the Ovation. Now for the back contour, will you be taking the Brad Pitt model, or the Chris Farley? We have a sale on Farleys today."

Tom, 'have had a Gibson J-50 for over three decades, it's a 45 with natural finish.

Postively superb, repeat, superb instrument. In this opinion, it's on par with a D-28 and makes Taylors look like plastic-coated factory-produced cigar boxes.

We had this discussion the other day over on mylespaul. It's an impossible question to answer, as they vary so much and our tastes do too. I personally don't like Taylor but love Martin and Gibson. I have 1964 Gibson J-45, a 2007 Gibson J-45 "50s reissue", and a 2008 Martin H-D 28. The newer Gibson and the Martin blow my old one away believe it or not. Not all old guitars are better.

My Martin is on the right.
