From my own experience, I'm torn between Gibson and Martin. I know there are plenty of boutique and smaller companies that I haven't played, so I'm willing to admit that they're better if I get my hands on one.

I own a few Takamines and they are great. Made by a Fender owned Kaman. But i still have to say Taylor has everything else beat in the acoustic department. Then Gibson runs in second and the over rated Martin a slower third. This is just from my experience with acoustic testing for my style of music which is classic rock and country with a taste of bluegrass and contemporary atl christian rock.

I would have to say my number one choice has to be Gibson, I also like the Guild's.

My acoustic playing does not deserve a fine instrument! My humble Yamaha is the fitting tool for me...

That's right, why is playing an acoustic so much harder? :)

Playing an acoustic isn't harder if you learn on one. Then again most people that have trouble playing an acoustic just have a hard time with the size difference of an electric..

In my opinion Taylor hands down makes the best acoustics.

Now Gibson can be better in acoustic than others. I just have a Royal Artist guitar xD.

I got myself a Martin 000CXE acoustic a month or two ago, it's an incredible guitar. Playing unplugged, fantastic tone. Plugged in to my AER Alpha 40w acoustic amp, absolute tone heaven. I can't speak highly enough about this beauty, then again what do I know!

In this experience and opinion, the best acoustics are the handmade non-factory guitars, as a genre.

That said, 'have an old Gibson flat top, greatly respect Martins and "do not get" Taylor at all. A buddy is nuts on them; this point of view sees very pricey factory-made urethane finish bolt-on guitars when "Taylor" is on the headstock.

To each their own.

Just like electrics, except more unique. There is no one best for everything. A Breedlove Focus for fingerstyle wouldn't be great at bluegrass like a Huss and Dalton, and vice versa.

Martins high end is good, though dated. Their low end is junk. Gibsons, like their electrics, are overpriced for what they are. Gibby acoustics sound dead, very little sustain. Not a fan of any of their guitars for that matter.

Breedlove, Olson, Jeff Traugott, Huss and Dalton, all great guitars. Taylor makes some great guitars, as does Larrivee. The way Taylor necks can adjust and be modded for electronics is amazing. So many other companies are taking Taylor's lead on the CNC thing, and the way they make their necks.

Guild, to me, makes (or made) great guitars for the money. I've played $600 Guilds that were better in feel, tone and construction that a lot of other guitars 3x the price or more.

Fender acoustics were always low end, cheap sounding, and cheap feeling to me. They don't know how to make acoustic guitars, and should stop embarrasing themselves.

As is my Epi. It's got nice enough tone and feel for what I use it for.
