quality to price its still a good deal though. When the economy changes the proletariat is always the last to feel it. Buisiness's feel the pinch and the benefits first.

They're still affordable, they're still good quality and they're actually more affordable now than they were in the '50s (inflation considered). So why does everyone keep complaining? If you want to save money, buy used. Problem solved.

For their quality, the price on today's Fender products are just fine. Just glad they're not as bad as Gibson's prices... :?

Gibson is the only company (that I've noticed) that kept their prices the same.

And affordable? $540 for a Mexican Fender? MIM Fenders are supposed to be entry-level, budget guitars that still let you say you own a quality Fender guitar, that even a high school kid working mininum wage could save up for and still be able to get a car. I feel bad for any kid just starting out today.

A Fender in the 50's was $300, not almost touching $600.

That's why they make Squiers. Squiers are entry-level, budget guitars that are great for starting guitar on. Something like the Classic Vibe series is almost equivalent to Fender in quality, and even the Affinity series is decent. I own one, my first guitar. $100, and I had enough money saved up to buy it when I was 11. My Dad ended up surprising me with it for Christmas after I announced that I was going to buy it. If I was 11 and I had enough money saved up from just my allowance and birthdays for a Strat, I wouldn't worry about those high schoolers on minimum wage.

In the 1950s you could buy a new house for somewhere are $10,000.
Suits were $30. A sewing machine was $20. Ritz Crackers were 32 cents.
You could buy a new car for less than $2000.

If you have $100 Converted from 1950 to 2005 it would be equivalent to $835.41 today. (From www.thepeoplehistory.com)

So if Fender Strats cost $300 in the '50s, today's equivalent would be $2506.23. A Mexican Strat is still under $600, just over a quarter of the cost.
Even a modern day American Strat is still only about half the cost they used to be in the '50s.
All things considered, I think that Fender is justified in raising prices a little. In the end it'll probably help your local Mom and Pop guitar store just as much as it'll help Fender too. So it's nothing to keep moaning about, and again, if you want to save money buy used.

I haven't really checked out Squier lately. I still have mine too, and don't get me wrong, its a great guitar and sounds totally awesome and grizzly from years of abuse warping its sound, and I still trust it to get me through shows.

Either way, close to $600 for an entry-level FENDER, not a beginner's guitar, is ridiculous.

And then Fender starts to lose money when everyone decides they can't afford a nice, new guitar, fresh from the factory, and buy them second hand on ebay or private owners selling on Craigslist or guitar shows, or even an old fashion garage sale.

Give it a bit, I bet they'll drop when it starts to hurt them.

Gibson has been raising their prices a couple of times a year for several years.

My personal opinion is if you don't like the price of Fender guitars (or any other guitar) then don't buy it.

The big 2 have always been FENDER AND GIBSON. within the last 10 years a lot of smaller companies started coming on strong with quality guitars-PRS-DEAN-ERNIE BALL-WASHBURN-JACKSON-PEAVEY.sO THERES NOT A BIG MONOPOLY ON THE MARKET anymore and there is a lot of bang for the buck,I would say on WHOLE fENDER PROBABLY COME IN 4TH PRICE WISE BEHIND GIBSON-PRS AND DEAN.They must of just figured it was time for a hike even though they picked a bad time (THE ECONOMY IS BAD) but thats life .I bought a Clapton and Beck sfrat 6 years ago they were around $1,300 each I got them both brand new with stickers and tags on ebay for a grand each .Now I see there over 2 grandbut you could still get them new on ebay and save a few hundred that is the way I would go.The bottom line is all my Fenders are built like a tank and outside of getting a refret once have never had problems they are meant to last a life time. And lower end models today are not what they used to be you spend 5 or 6 hundred your getting a quality guitar to gig or rcord with as there is so much compatition amongst the makers you get a bang for your buck.So if you can live without the quilted maple or heavy birdseye neck and all the other cosmetics that jack up the price of the guitar, you can still get a damn good guitar for a moderate price.

If you don't think $500 is fair for an entry level instrument that can be played for many years, even as one becomes professional, I suggest you never even THINK about taking up saxophone, piano, any orchestral string, or woodwind, or brass instrument or... well, just about anything but a guitar.

A machine-made electric guitar like a Strat is an incredible bargain.
