He said he wants kids to play the real thing and not a plastic controller.

Now I've never liked Prince but I have to say I'm 100% on his side with this.

You have to admit, like him or not, the guy can play guitar.
I'm with him 100% on this too. That's why my son is getting a Fender for his birthday on the 10th. :D

I would have to say I would have to fully agree with this guy. What will the future musicians of the world be like knowing only plastic toys?

Can't say I totally agree.
Let's face it, Guitar Hero is a game. Most kids that play it are never going to pick up a real guitar and take the time to learn.
However there are a lot of kids that may be inspired to learn to play that had never wanted to play before.
It's not going to make kids that want to play a real guitar suddenly change their minds and be a professional Guitar Hero player. But it might make that young boy or girl that never really thought about playing a guitar want to pick up the real thing.
I see no harm in it.

though I definitely agree that prince is right when he criticizes guitar hero, you do bring up a good point. many kids want to learn the songs they play in guitar hero for real, and that is their own personal incentive to keep them practicing.

I have 2 sons 16 and 11.They are surounded by music and I have been playing long before they were born.My oldest has never had an interest for the guitar he has the lazy mans gift of music he can sing like a pro but does not really have his fathers taste for music believe it or not he is into 40s standards and Sinatra his mothers side.lol My lil guy likes rock ,and they wanted guitar hero for Christmas I felt the same way as Prince but i bought for them anyway, one was the AROSMITH version and the other was like classic rock.Day after day hour after hour they were plaing that game and the more it got me mad .After a few months my lil guy is telling his friends AEROSMITH is his favorite group then I start hearing him playing MR CROWELY AND CRAZY TRAIN ON YOUTUBE.Then it happened he came to me and said DAD I want to learn to play real guitar.2 months later he can play the opening riff to crazy train, smoke on the water ,and all of Iron Man except the solos. So I have to say the game did turn him on to a lot of good music and made him want to play the real thing.I guess that this might be the lead way for the video age kids to get into it.On the whole I agree with what Prince(WHO BY THE WAY IS A KILLER PLAYER AND ALL AROUND MUSICIAN)is saying but times are changing and if this is what it takes for the kids to carry the torch I AM FOR IT,

That was a good interview to watch from begining to end. He talked about guitar hero wanting to use his music and his thoughts about it and the difficulty of learning to play a real guitar and that people have to just stick with it and work. Most of the interview was about the 3 CD set of Lotus Flower which includes a Cd by Bria Valente its another CD made by Prince from start to finish and no record label involved as he puts it to take the artist money and try to own some of the music rights.

Last year, i had a couple room mates, one was a guitar teacher. Every year he gets a whack of new students inspired by their prowess with guitar hero.

he says the vast majority of them quit when they find out that playing guitar takes some work. but a very few stick it out. On the other side young people are listening to a lot more rock than they were before this series started. Some younger guys at work actually come to me and ask for advice on music to check out. (like i did with the guys with the giant album collections 20 years ago,) so if it helps in any way to shift music back toward rock, and other forms where people actually play instruments, then it is a good thing.

I also never really cared for Prince, but i won tickets to a concert (years and years ago,) and for the most part it wasn't my cup of tea at all, but a couple times he pulled out his guitar(before the weird symbol name change thing,) out, he played a few absolutely smoking riffs, then set it aside, i was blown away. I had no idea he was that good.

They weigh a ton unlike plastic unless you get a really good one made of ash. But you will know what wood sounds like when you play it. There is nothing else like it except maple. But maple weighs even more than your LP.

I have to say that I must be getting old. I cannot see spending that much time on a game to "learn" the songs and not be able to actually play a real guitar.

I did a demo a few months back. It was a Guitar Hero contest and I was there to demo a real guitar. The time spent on the game vs learning to play a real guitar was the basis of my lesson.

The only good that comes out of Guitar Hero and Rock Band is that it does introduce young people to some music they might not have ever listened to on their own.

Funny... I'm a huge Prince fan, but this kind of diminishes him in my eyes.

Why would a real rocker care one way or the other? IT'S JUST A FREAKING VIDEO GAME.

I've been a professional for many years and I still play Guitar Hero for fun (my son bought me a copy for Christmas... he's in the game industry).

I wonder how many felons and criminals look at games like Grand Theft Auto, and think,"That is so stupid. If you want to rob someone, go out and do it for real, not on some stupid video game...."

For the record, I do hate Guitar Hero, but maybe it does serve the purpose of keeping people with tin ears, no rhythm/timing, or sense of melody/harmony from getting real guitars, and then posting "Bestest Guitarist of All Eternity" and "Most Awesome-st Guitarist from Another Dimension" polls and threads here... :P

Not a huge fan of princes music as a whole, but will readily admit the man can play a guitar until it begs for mercy!

Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLmZKsWRL9E

As far a music games go, take them or leave them. They can be fun in their own context but are hardly a substitute for the real thing.
