Hi eyerish: that's a shocker. Name and shame that seller, is what I say.

You could smell glue when you opened the package? Sounds like maybe he used the wrong glue - this ain't the work of a pro, right?

Mind you, if the body is good in other respects then it is possible to remove the existing glue and rebond the thing using the correct material, if you are up for it. I've never made a blank yet (just about to make my first, as it happens) so I'll stand aside for more experienced people to comment on that, if you're interested. (You around, cvilleira?)

Hang in there, man. Treat it as fate's way of telling you there's a slightly different journey to take. If you can pull this one out of the fire then you'll feel even better about it in the end...

Cheers - C

Don't name him... he did a terrible job, but hopefully he's getting a hint.

Bad luck man! Just so you know - you'll never get a proper bond by jamming glue (or glue and sawdust) into the existing split. The glue must contact ALL the surfaces to be glued - evenly - then clamped - once again EVENLY. You might get it stuck back together, (and if it was just something decorative I'd say go for it) but you will never achieve a bond worthy of an instrument. For that, the body must be broken apart and the joining edges re-planed, re-glued and re-clamped.

Sorry to hear about it. Nasty bit of business!

I am a buyer and seller on Ebay. I haven't had any bad guitars yet, though I did sell a set of defective pups and I didn't know it when I sold them. I refunded the money and all is well. Stuff happens, but it seems that you have started off on the wrong foot with Ebay. Just be patient, it will all work itself out.

Eyerish:

I think people are misunderstanding you, because of the composition of your post. Its hard to read.

I agree you are getting the shaft, I think he knows its too expensive and too much hassle for you to pursue the matter.

That said, i don't think the climate had much if anything to do with that split. i think the body was probably poorly made. i would guess the sides of the seam weren't planed properly (run through a jointer,) weren't properly cleaned before gluing, letting crap in, that interfered with the bond, and/or used an improper glue, like a normal white glue. I am willing to guess he misrepresented the origin of the body. I think your problem is at least one of these, and most likely a mix of all these. I have shipped a body from the southern states, up here to Canada in the dead of winter, so a much more drastic change in climate, it was -41 C (-42 F for ya yanks,) here the day i took delivery, and it was fine, and it didn't have any oils or anything on it.I did let the box warm up in the house overnight before opening. So I think he was ripping you off from the get go, not a shipping issue per se.

If you have some woodworking chops, i think it can be saved, but it will take some doing, and you'll need access to some equipment. You will need some patience, I hope you have it, but I think you might have that famous Irish temper!! Just kidding!

You have my sympathy too. I haven't been ripped off, but I kind of fear it when I purchase from the bay. I think you would have had more sympathy from people here, if you had taken a bit more time to format your post, so it didn't run together so much, people misread you.

I hope you can fix it, I guess just be thankful you only got hosed for a small amount ( I know fiddy bones is fiddy bones, but it could have been worse.)

The glue smell is because it was subjected to an extreme of heat which softened the glue and the movement of the wood from the various temp changes brought on the split.

FYI - Wood glue will not soften after it has hardened, or "kicked"- not even in desert temperatures. If it did, all guitars, (and for that matter, any laminated wood product - tables, chairs etc.) would require temperature controlled shipping and storing - (sort of like lettuce  .) There would be furniture splitting apart all over the world.

This is just total conjecture but, what if the guy went to ship it and noticed a fine crack. "I better just touch that up for the customer," he thinks. He smooths in a bit of epoxy, (fast acting, but the wrong glue for wood generally.) By the time it reaches you the curing glue has done all sorts of nastiness in the climate changes. It's way worse than when it left, and it stinks!

That's the only way I can see for it to have a strong smell of glue.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck with it!

Please let me set the story straight.

I bought the body from KnE and finished it in RED lacquer.

I wanted to do another build so I stripped the guitar down to its parts and sold them all on eBay to get some cash.

I stripped the body using lacquer thinner then sanded to 320. Anyone who has ever done that knows it was no small task. So that smell you call glue is really the odor left from lacquer thinner.

I never bought an unfinished body that was "oiled" new or otherwise so I never thought of treating it so.

I suspect that unfortunately going from the cold damp of Pittsburgh to the extreme opposite of Arizon had an ill effect on the body.

When I was told that the body split I offered to buy it back and was declined. I immediately got a hold of Mitch @ KnE and requested a replacement. I then contact the buyer and for some reason he didn't want it. So I thought things worked out with the body and cancelled the order.

After many abusing and whining emails I had enough so I just gave the buyer his money back minus the $25 he sold it to someone else for. I should have known when th item was purchased and there was a hold on the funds that transaction was going to be a PITA.

Just so you don't think I'm a crackpot these are the three KnE guitars I did over last winter

Hi old_metal_head, welcome to the Forum.

How rarely we get to hear the other side of a story: thank you for posting that. Certainly throws light on the whole thing.

I wonder how you came to this thread - you surely didn't just stumble upon it by chance?

Anyhow. You seem to have good knowledge and skills, so now you're here why not stick around and join in the party?

We celebrate building and finishing work round here!

Cheers - C

I did stumble on this thread while searching the interweb for all information on "KnE guitars."

In fact I stumbled on this as well:

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=5320690&albumID=2474935&imageID=55517223

It was the first guitar I did that had a pretty top.

I'm a member of many guitar-related forums and read a lot but post very little. I can burn hours reading other peoples writings about guitars. There is soooo much.

Anyhow my first guitar was a Red American Fat Strat that I started playing when I was 36. I wore that thing out and loved every minute of it.

I don't know if it is a natural progression but eventually playing guitar didn't seem to be enough so I started assembling guitars from parts.

The first couple were cheap Ibanezes that I just stripped apart and put back together. I guess my next step is spending some money on tools. I'd like to be able to do great fret jobs first as it seems all of the necks I buy could be better.

How much for the tele?

I live in a damp climate so as long as it survives the aircraft hold at high altitude all should be fine. :D

Wow man you're getting us all wrong! Sure you got some nasty sounding replies, but I have to admit, that due to the emotional state you wrote you're topic in, it was a bit chaotic to read.
And some people here on the forum are just not that good at posting without hurting people (I'm one of those to appearently), but I'm sure they all mean well.

You can always find sympathy here, and you shouldn't judge a crowd by the rude people in it!

Anyway, keep enjoying the guitar you have, save up and buy an ibanez acoustic or something like that, those are pretty fine sometimes!
Good (Irish) Luck!

Funny - I am laid off and working on a project strat, too. I completely get where your head is at, dude... Good luck with finishing the gits.

PS If you are looking for sympathy for your problem, you have my sympathy in spades. I know what you are going through. Hang in there, man...
