Going for a long walk, then watch some films, and put in some bass time.

Thanks, for the look above and below of your Strat, Marky.

The black setup looks like the 2011 Tungsten Strat I was taking about. Your change rocks with a growl and looks to mean business. Nice!

The white doesn’t bother me. It has a different vibe for sure. In a strange way I think it’s kinda funky.

Your HSS routing is handy to have, Marky. Humbucker routing is one of the reasons why I chose my Amn. Deluxe. If I decide a need, although unlikely, or were I to decide a sell or trade, it’s one of the more useful features for sure. In my case it’s an HSH routing.

I’ve read that mounting a humbucker in some of these prerouted Strats that, even should the humbucker fit, room for wiring under and alongside the pup might be a concern if the depth needs to be increased, and raising and lowering the pickup being installed will need attention with screw length and hole depth, etc. In short it could be an easy peasy fit or difficult.

One particular thing that I like about my present (and other but not all) single coils is more or less a constant volume when switching bridge, middle, and neck positions. Generally, when humbuckers are installed, my experience has heard a noticeable jump or decrease in volume amongst switching positions. I like to have control throughout whether single coil, humbuckers, or both. If I am correct, installation, and taking care to best match your new humbucker pickup, is key to reaching this goal somewhat. Oh sure, technique can also be a fix, but that’s one more step than not having to do it. Mixing different pup brands and their offerings will add their own characteristics.

Installing and designing for compatability are not the same. I’d be interested on whether there is merit and/or advantage of one combo over the other for stock single coil(s) with related stock humbucker(s), stock single coil(s) with unrelated stock humbucker(s), unrelated single coil(s) with stock humbucker(s), or mixed up pups in the mix. Mind you, mods to the electronic controls are also a consideration. Seems to me a lot of these combos leave any hint or whiff of science behind and require some luck or voodoo to get it right. That is unless one doesn’t care for the set to flow when switching and/or combining bridge and middle, middle and neck or how the three pups complement each other. yada yada

Is any of this bad? Not if it is intended; but, I’m of the belief that many choose or discover the benefits over the matching across the whole. Can’t say, but there are great applications for
humbuckers and thousands of those sold can’t be wrong - just different.

Good looking axe, Marky.

- Gary

I think four pickups would be perfect, then if you have a 3 pup combo that blends, you can toggle switch into and use the fourth separately and change off or experiment any way you want without affecting the whole. My guess is this exists, but I think it should be common. They’d sell more pickups methinks.

Just sayin’

Thanks, Gary! :D I've had that guitar for over a year and the white didn't really bother me but there was just something about it. I just wasn't feeling it so for under $20 and a little time it now feels right. 8) Like yours, mine is routed HSH but I really don't think I'm going to change pickups. To my ears, these sound fantastic and I have two other guitars with humbuckers, so why bother. All is well. :)

That’s how I feel too, Marky. Don’t fix what’s not broken, huh?

I bought N3 noiseless for several reasons. Recording and a great mother-in-law who once lived with us with her sensitive hearing aids and love for all music. Are the N3s perfect? Nope! But, neither are others IMHO. Okay, some are better, but, more are worse. I have yet to try the N4s. I don’t really want to because I might wanna change. I moved from 9s to 10s with the strings, almost from the beginning. I considered 11s but changed my mind. I’ve spent considerable time learning the capabilities of my modeling amp and single coils guitar to the point that I know from A/B comparisons that I can reproduce several key sounds I’m looking for. I can get the growl if if I want it, and I’m not far from improving that need be. It is a Strat after all. I can get early 60s surf sounds that sound like it’s coming from a 60s guitar with a Twin Reverb, and it’s close enough that some would be, including me who, as is known, used the ‘62 Strat into a Bandmaster in the 60s, in disbelief. I’ll probably chase that drip the way I remember and know it. Not the way it sometimes falls short (providing I don’t break the bank with a Bassman and a separate Fender Reverb). Maybe, I’ll luck out, but this ol’ guy will probably take a compromised route first, which is not unattainable with the technology of today. I have the Mustang IV and plugins to tweak and play with, and a Lexicon which I’ve only used for vocals so far and soon to be recruited for drums. That would be a good start for surfin’, dude. Plus my TCH vocal pedal has some sweet guitar effects that include reverbs and delays; but, perhaps, I’ll move to that tube amp and . . . I haven’t any kids to leave gear to, so I don’t want to make an investment far and wide for the time I have left. I could make an investment for some related gear (possibly a Strymon El Capistan Delay), and rent the rest on occasion. Lots of others do that. We’d do that for studio performances all the time.

In some ways the modern guitar, as you know, does a better job. In other ways not, mostly because material for components may no longer be available and neither is the precise sound or mojo. I gotta give two thumbs up for the improvements and consistency made though, especially body wise. Having a choice of necks and, to some extent, hardware along with more pickups to choose from are definitely desirable features.

Dickering with the pickups is a personal choice for sure, as well as a hobby. Give me a guitar I can’t bond with or haven’t spent a fair chunk of change on but want to keep and improve, and those optional pups are more likely to find a home. Playing with a band to get that overall sound definitely ups the chances. Maybe, with a cherished guitar or not, and having the conversion emulate a known sure thing by example, I would totally get it. Then again, there’s the choice of guitars at all prices already to go. You can never have enough of those to support your GAS. :P
Are my pickups equal in tone satisfaction? The neck and bridge are, and the middle isn’t terrible (but could be better). However, I’ve grown to like and use them all more now that I can see the use where they work best. That’s pretty typical on those pickups that aren’t noiseless too. Noiseless or not, there are tradeoffs and I believe both types are good depending on application and execution. Not sure if a mix of the two types would see fruition; however, it’s not unusual to have one pickup that is trick for effect.

The S1 and 5 way switching is nothing to scoff at either. 50’s Rock and Roll giant Buddy Holly would agree. He was famous for jamming his 3 way switch into 4th and 5th positions (between 1 & 2, and between 2 & 3). Imagine if he had more choices? How can I complain when I have 10 combinations to switch in or out of? I can afford to ignore a few tone junkies and still have more to like. Perhaps, that’s why chasing a different pickup is less urgent for me. I also like having Alnico 2, 3, and 5s with balanced volume switching. :P
I know you get that warm and fuzzy feeling and vibe with your new Strat too, Marky. That colour and new look screams mojo. 8)
YMMV

Cheers!

Thanks, Gary! I know what you mean about pups. It can be part of a never-ending search for tone. I totally get finding your tone. I worked years finding one I really like, for now. It includes chorus, delay and reverb pedals through my tube amp. It sounds amazing, to my ear, but may be trash to someone else. I play this setup the most but, when it's time to get dirty, it all changes.

Mike recently installed some N4's. He did a nice job but it wasn't as easy as hoped for. He loves them.

Have fun!

We wound up doing some bass and drums jamming for a little bit, before we got some Chinese takeout. I wound up using my violin bass for this, instead of the Ibanez short scale. I also find it interesting that I have a tendency to play differently on the violin bass, than I do the Ibanez. I find my self coming up with different ideas that don't really translate well to the Ibanez. It's really strange. Maybe it has to do with the set up, I don't know? It actually didn't sound too bad through the Ampeg, even though I didn't really tweak any of the settings on it. Certainly a lot better than it did through the Orange head.

When you get satisfaction with your tone, Marky, best not to mess with it. I once played In sync with 18 drummers. With different brand drums they naturally did not sound perfectly identical; however, I’ve also regularly played with 8 drummers and with identical drums tuned together they sounded the same. Try that with identical guitars. Better still, try that with violins.
Great that your setup is giving you terrific results, Marky. I wouldn’t be concerned about others not finding your tone to their liking. They have no taste. :P The others are gourmet aficionados. :D

Good to hear Mike’s N4s are giving positive results. I’ve heard good things about them. Interesting about the installation. I’ll have to catch up with that. Thanks, Marky.

I'm doing laundry, then I'll have to go to the store later. With any luck, I might be doing some jamming on the bass, but that's hard to tell right now.

I have a small laundry/furnace/storage room that allows me minimal work space. A small table, a couple of tool boxes that get too heavy to carry, a hung cabinet, a couple of shelves, and a nails/screw/nuts and bolts hung cabinet. Sounds like a lot of room, huh? Add the electric and hand tools, whatchamacallits, and whojockamapivots and, because those things can’t be accessed outside here in the winter, they’re brought inside, and because crap happens when you least expect it, especially with a house, things can get difficult and disorganized at times. Sometimes, things get put back out of place and/or they’re no where to be seen. I think they go to a 3rd dimension or the Twilight Zone. Today was clean out and reorganize from scratch.

Had junk on the shelves, and power tools in the cabinet. That often proved to be a problem when the table was loaded up. Today I built another exterior shelf, put the power tools within easy reach on them, kept the most used things on shelves, and put the lesser used junk separated into baggies, and into the hung cabinet. Now I’m über organized . . . until I look for sumpin’.
My big plan is to complete what I need or want to do within 2 years, if not sooner. I’m werkin’ on it. After that it’s sit back and watch the hired help with their tool kit. Then I’ll feel retired. :P
