I managed to put in some bass time today, with the violin bass. Now, I have to get to the store.

Hey, at least now a days they are making amps a hell of a lot lighter, at least where bass gear is concerned. No complaints there. I've never been too hung up on the tube or solid state thing, probably because the majority of my gear was solid state, and I never had any issues with that. I guess it depends on what particular sound you really want to go for.
The Mustang IV was my choice over my tube choices partly because of the weight, Paul. I get that. It does pretty good for my needs. There was a time when an authentic ‘62 Strat and a Bandmaster (sadly not mine) met my needs too and, although I’ll never see that around here, it does tweak the senses.

I’ve used enough old technology and new technology to have an appreciation and dislike for both. I worked with a tube jukebox and, even with it’s heavily tracked worn records, versus the digital jukeboxes the old one had a character and sound that is worth consideration. Likewise amps work the same way IMHO.

Weight may be better today for solid states, but I’d like to see even more weight trimmed from some of the tube combos by adding separate heads and cabs where they don’t exist now in the lineups of those well accepted models. I’d also prefer to see modern lightweight and modern strong materials and design wherever possible, and I think there’s a market for newer specifically made for the home models versus every use on the road models. The typical present day combo and reissues have a requirement to be more robust which, fir the moment, adds weight. Not a lot of abuse, movement, and such need be a requirement to be met for the home.

Lastly and briefly, I wouldn’t turn down a Kemper, and I have a friend who is a collector of amps including a Kemper who agrees. His collection has been or is being sampled so he can release some gear as he completes his project. Digital and solid state can be very good indeed; but, it’s not always the case when build, performance, reliability, sound, or support is lacking.

Solid state, digital, and tubes all have their perks and quirks. I would like a tech to do the work while I play, and do I want to experiment with and maintain tubes? I dunno. My generation may not be finished with tubes; but, I have a belief, aside from studios, the day is coming when tubes will no longer have the popularity as they did and do. Blind tests between SS and tubes are finding the popular gap is narrowing.

Will I choose solid state because of the technology or tubes because of the technology? Well, the weight might once again be a breaker. Hopefully, neither. I’d like to think it’s because of the sound. Or will it be because of the Surf colour or Paisley paint job? I can’t say. I haven’t found it yet.

YMMV

Have a rawkin’ great time today. Marky, That sounds like a fun time with that great little amp. :D

Today I’m sharing the cooking duties with my better half. Tomorrow we host 8 family members. All cousins from her side of the family.

She just made the dessert that was just put in the oven. French Apple pie (later the crumble will be topped with whipped cream). She’ll be making her panko breaded veal (one of my favourite things. I didn’t care much for steak until my thirties now I love both).

I’m making old cheddar cheese biscuits this morning, creamy lemon sauce for the lemon veal, original mushroom sauce for those who would prefer that. Twice baked stuffed potatoes (from the recipe I learned when I took a stint of Navy cooking for experience and extra time off  in Europe. That twice baked pomme de terre lesson became a family fave long before today’s trend and the Internet. Bought some smoked applewood Canadian bacon which will be cooked best in the microwave and chopped, and my addition is to add light maple syrup and toss it with the bacon before mixing with those scooped out baked spuds. I’ll mash with chopped chives, sour cream, a little milk, butter, salt, and pepper. I’ll stuff the skins and bake again, and finally top with mayo, paprika and parsley, and dress it with a sautéed shrimp. No cheese here because French onion soup to start the meal will take care of that. To add a little colour there will be some chopped sweet and sour cinnamon/vinegar infused German red cabbage with a touch of apple to keep it real. We’ll need to wash it down with suckies
And last but not least, music since we’ll have 8 around the table in the family room. :D
Gotta go. I’m being put to work.

The best thing about being the cook is you get to sample. :P

Dang, that sounds good, FSB. Except for the shrimp. Makes me swell up and break out in hives. Pretty much the same for crab, lobster, and clams. Perhaps I'm just envious you can get veal. Almost never see it here, it all goes to the Italian restaurants, very rare to find it in a grocery store in the states. At least real milk-fed veal.

Thanks, vinyl. I just figured out it’s pretty much an international dinner (onion soup - the French kind), mozzarella for the soup (Italian) veal (Italian and others), red cabbage (German), bacon (Canadian sliced), maple syrup (Canadian / American), potatoes (Irish and others), sour cream (Ukrainian and others), apple pie (mostly Canadian and American . . . but this one is French) and the shrimp is from Argentina. The booze is from the Iiquor store.
Not being able to eat seafood is a tough go, I figure. For me that would be like giving up ice cream. I grew up where lobster and scallops rule on the Atlantic, salmon, ling cod. crab, and halibut on the west coast, trout, walleye, northern pike, tasty perch, and so on elsewhere. I was an avid fresh and saltwater fisherman having dug for clams, taught by traditional enthusiasts, and I caught my share of seafood both crustaceans and those with fins. Kinda particular about shrimp except when eating out or ordering Chinese food. Can’t do much there, and that goes for no name on the menu salmon too. I try to avoid farmed seafood, and I go out of my way to do that. I could talk about seafood for some time, suffice to say that I love to cook it. and have tried some of the less eaten or cooked recipes in that category. We live in times where seafood is either expensive or rare so I’m doing my part to enjoy what the next generation may not have the opportunity to enjoy like we have now, sad to say.

I live where Hutterites feed 500 pigs at a time, grain farmers provide us with all kinds of bread, and ranchers, mostly in adjacent provinces, provide us with lots of beef with veal included. Bison is big here, and a lot of lamb is available. We had problems too getting veal for the same reasons. Restaurants.

Something changed a while ago. Not always available, but pretty regular. Maybe markets or distribution. Whatever it was, it works for me.

Here’s my tip to get veal in your neighbourhood. Do what I do. Move into a city surrounded by ranches and farms, live in or close to an Italian neighbourhood, check if there’s competition with the local Italian mall or butcher. Last of all - Be prepared to pay a fair chunk of change.

Happy shopping.

Checking social media crap and email. I'm not sure what else is going on later. Maybe, I'll get some bass time in.

Man, it's hard to resist that face. My dogs run the show around here. They are really good dogs and great friends. I'm happy you have Apollo and know how you feel.

My new black plastics arrived from StewMac yesterday and I'm going to put them on today. They are white now with a black pick guard and I just can't get used to them. The body is aged cherry laminate and the white knobs don't look right to me. I'll post some before and after picks to see what you guys think. 8)

Hey Marky. They may not be all that bad. Of course, that depends on the continuity of like parts in some, but not all, cases.

I once disappointingly turned down a new top of the line hot Chevy Blazer for another SUV. Not that I couldn’t afford or want it. it was because GM had this habit of what looked to be throwing in parts that were left over from earlier models. Also, the good and bad was that you could buy a vehicle and be sure to find plenty of parts available. The problem was not only did one size for all fit, but it seemed that one colour for all was trending. Hmm. Tan framing of a black switch on the mismatched coloured doors and black dash panels? Maybe, mismatched colour scheme covers (You know. The snap on plates where accessories weren’t installed.) on a different colour and so on and so on. It looked like a “what’s left over?” job. Then a premium name, a few extra options, and a premium price came to steer you from what never worked; but, you could tell where little or no thought went into it, especially seeing the same ugliness throughout the lineup in this or other products (which speaks for itself). Phht!

What gets me is guitar manufacturers and their pairing of a black pup with white ones, or vice versa, to give it a feature. Chrome, gold (maybe) or the same colour for sure; but, that mismatch just shouts, “Aw just throw it in”. If you’re okay with it, that’s okay too. There is a following for oddities like with rat rods. Used or modded is definitely a toss up. I just think that when you buy new it should include a little more thought when it comes to mismatches. IMHO C’mon manufacturers! Even a sub $100 axe can provide the correct pickup colour combo.

In your build, Marky it’s different. so I wouldn’t rule out what works. Maybe, it looks just fine either way. The Strat I had before this one was Tungsten with black plastics all around. Those black witch hats and the tungsten looked really good. What didn’t grab me, and why I traded it off, was the brown (rosewood) fret board. Not that I didn’t like the Strat or the rosewood, but I think ebony or lighter maple would have been a better match. Want the rosewood for tone? Perhaps, a different body colour choice would have been the way to go. Obviously, others thought differently. Here’s where it gets funky. Fender has a cool history of associated auto colour schemes. I guess mismatches with knobs, switches, and pup covers aren’t too far off the mark after all.
I’m sure your decision will be just fine, Marky. :D

Thanks, Gary!

I finished her up and took some pictures. My ancient smartphone camera always makes the borders look purplish but they are really just darker. Here are my pics:

So it's routed for a possible HSH configuration. Hmm... I've been thinking about an HSS. I'll save that for another day. 8)
