Gotta love the fun factor, Marky. :D
I made a big purchase the other day. Amazon delivered a Lightning, USB 3 camera adapter that charges the iPhone (or iPad which Mrs. FSB has), and it comes with a head phone jack while taking the keyboard’s USB Roland UM ONE mk 2 midi cable.
FSB

I hope you bought the Apple version. I have a friend who tried to save some money and bought a clone. She went through 2 of the clones before buying the OEM model. I remember the clones didn't work right but I don't remember exactly what the problem was. If you bought a clone and it doesn't work right, you can save yourself some time and return it for the Apple.

Have fun with it. I love getting new toys, too. 8) And good luck finding just the right laptop!

Checking email and did some domestic crap around the house. I may or may not do some jamming on the bass later. It all depends if my girlfriend wants to drum or not.

Thanks, for the luck, Marky. That’s probably the road I’ll travel. I made the mistake of buying my last phone at BB only to find out they sell your information. Only then, after about thirty years, did
we get bombarded with scam calls at home and on our mobile gear. Can’t say that made a difference, but odds are . . . so no laptops from them. YMMV Unfortunately, computer sales here are limited locally compared to some markets.

When I was in Vancouver on my last trip, I bought a clone for another cable to charge my phone while using the dumb a** lightning pods/power combo connection since they dropped the hdst. jack on the phone. :?: Headset worked but charging was slow to none, and that was a problem doubling up for car charging and GPS from the cellphone. Returned and got the Apple version.

However, Belkin adapters and nice PowerBear cables have worked well. Look for Apple’s MFI certified for any Apple clone hardware and software and you should be good to go if they are authentic. Looks like Belkin may be Apple related since the Apple store supplied that one and because Apple did not make the type I was looking for. Belkin was a common standard over the years where I worked so I knew to trust it.

This last cable is being tested at half the price of Apple, but mostly because again Apple doesn’t make a headphone jack with charging and USB 3 AFAIK. So far so good. Even if the USB midi connection fails, the charging and headset is working and expected to with luck. At the very least the regular mini headset jack will so I’ll get value for the price. Without the headset jack it would be more of a gamble. Incidentally, everything Apple is krazy overpriced in Canada IMHO.

My laptop preference is a 15“ matte fairly bright screen of 400 nits or more, 16 GB Ram, 512GB SSD or more, i7 or more, decent cooling but not too noisy, and decent battery, backlit decent keys, low latency, hopefully Bluetooth, a card slot, and decent support with a roll of the dice for dependability yada yada. We old retired coots don’t want to change for the latest greatest but it’s good to prep for some longevity. Gaming, although good, is less of a priority since there’s plenty to like these days.

Seems that there’s plenty of loaded choices to choose from at the entry level and the top level. Somewhere in the middle it appears more fragmented. I’m hoping to get it before tax time, because my desktop no longer meets the software requirements; but, I’ll manually do taxes rather than compromise for that. I’ve liked, built, and updated desktops over the years; but, they’ve changed and portability doesn’t apply. Desktops and laptops sure are different. My first desktop 17 years, second 18 +, laptop?

Gary - glad to hear you have things well under control. I was looking for a new laptop not long ago and noticed that many don't have cd drives. I guess cd's are becoming obsolete but I still like to be able to burn a cd. There's always external drives but they're a bit inconvenient. Have fun searching. It's enjoyable to learn about all the new stuff that's out there. YMMV

I'm about to have some breakfast and do some reading.

Yep! Sure is different today. There’s no shortage of a lack of connections or features for this or that whether new or old or more outboard stuff to facilitate. I used to sell Vaio laptops for Sony and a lot to the medical / business community with no complaints. Nice solid laptop and display, but sadly Sony dropped the line. Last I checked Vaio is still made (or at least designed and assembled) in Japan, and available in the U.S. online. In Canada service is difficult as is the price. Things change, so I can’t vouch for the new ones, but they brag about Vaio’s full load of connectivity and hands on assembly.

Funny you should mention CD/DVDs, Marky. I too was looking for those internal drives and they are becoming obsolete except for external add ons. I stocked up on blank discs of all types when there were sales with the intention of recording audio and video for my record collection, my instruments and vocals, downsizing family photo albums, documents to get rid of paperwork, and maybe some artwork. USB is okay when you have a USB. My car has a CD player and USB. I still find use for discs from my collection and storage. I hard copied a lot of backups over time along with programs. They say players and recorders take up space, add weight, and make noise, I think it’s the migration to the Cloud that is the direction being pushed.
In fact I bought an external Floppy drive which I seldom use, but it’s handy for quick use especially with single files, less clutter, and when I don’t want to associate it with my PC or a USB bundle of files to rummage through or search. Handy for uploads not associated to your PC file folders, It’s limited in storage size to be sure but simple and handy in a pinch. Besides, nobody wants that lot of old little used floppy discs I have leftover from yesteryear so I might as well use them. Kinda fun looking at nostalgic files like ancient clip art and freeware. :P
My thinking is that the optical disc drive is the same as MS Office. Control of the software and money. I don’t want a Photobucket decision to cancel my storage. Canon Irista just wrapped up the same this month with a change in their business plan. Phht!

Perhaps, as 4K rolls out, current laptops will drop in price. Whoo boy! I have a bridge for sale. I’m guessing 4K and later 8K storage and delivery of that data is bound to eventually come with a high price tag before and/or after just like broadcasters enjoy in sharing the airwaves. We might want to keep or send that hard copy by snail mail in the future. Just sayin’. Aw, fuggedaboutit.

Hope you enjoyed your breakfast, Marky. Just finished mine. :D Enjoy the day.

- Gary

Still downsizing the record collection. Excel helps me to look up my collection to prevent duplication of songs and artist unless it’s intentional. Recorded some old 40s stuff on LPs that I have for mixed company back in the days. Some is digestible, but others were family faves or hand me downs. Still, they have a place when I’m in the mood or nostalgic. So. I took the good stuff, and tried the DBX 3 head cassette deck so I could max the level (like digital), and not worry about clipping when set as indicated.

DBX isn’t perfect but it sure helps here especially for the normal tapes which I use for those less than stellar performances. These tapes are only good for a DBX playback; but, I may clean up some clicks, pops, and scratches on the PC later and I may make CDs which will take care of that.

Normally I’d record directly to PC, but using a tape deck is faster and easier for mass recording of records (except for those integrated USB turntables, perhaps; but, once the records for recording have come and gone, it may just be another turntable unless it’s ongoing, and usually those builds are okay but not great. YMMV

Pop in a tape and hit record once the first tape is set to go. Some studios do tape often for quick and easy convenience, and sometimes for backup or later considerations.

Fortunately, my tape counter is in real time, and it can be set for an up count or a down count to tell when the tape is running out. Plus, a remote beats sitting at the flat screen when other tasks are needed at a distance from the recorder. No time or chosen place to write the details either, so I enlisted the cellphone and shot photos of the album covers and song listings for later.

Gotta love the ability to scratch remove the recordings on computer though. Some recordings will never be digitized, Some shouldn’t be, and others are society’s loss.

Whoo hoo! Are you hoarding your flyers yet, Marky?

I’ve got three sets of income tax to complete. The toughest is collecting stuff out of province not knowing what to expect long story short. That’s where a flat tax could help. Personally, I’d prefer a fiat refund.
Enjoy yours, Marky.

Thanks, Gary. Sounds like my taxes were a lot easier to do than yours. See, it pays to be poor. :)
