We just finished breakfast. Not sure what's up for the rest of the day.

Going for a long walk, then some films and bass time.

Thanks, vinyl and Marky re: the 78s. I appreciate that. I agree that many later recordings are not necessarily better or worse than some of the originals. The Net has added a lot of recordings, thankfully, and 78s are included. 100 years of international recordings is a tall task that will not happen in my time or any other though with limited and missing copies out there. I have a couple in thick vinyl in mono that are audiophile quality with Satchmo, Krupa, and such. But, any genre is okay with me if it is interesting and versions count. IMHO. It could be an education with the recording and the labels can’t be discounted for a history lesson. Over the years I’ve collected all sorts of records since a small boy. I still have some 16 rpms and vinyl sheets from magazines with whales to Mad Magazine. I also have my first vocal recorded on disc when I first learned how to speak babble. It needs a lot of sweetening. Maybe, some heavy metal shredding. With first looks at a box of 78s that I inherited I just found “The Ukrainska Orchestra” with ethnic titles written in a way that I couldn’t understand. Perfect! I decided to make a fun CD and present the old disc jokingly to a cousin-in-law who was trained to play a fine accordion. After wrestling with an extra unused turntable with 78rpm, I had problems getting the record up to speed (I’ll work that out later), the automatic lifting of the tone arm too early at the end (I’ll fix that too), calling up a DAW that suddenly had missing registration and licensing when it shouldn’t have, :? going to another program that I used many times over the years where it would record, but gave headaches on playback preventing presets for cleanup of noise and scratches like other programs can do, I resorted to working manually with the waveforms on WaveLab LE, equalizers, very slight reverb to blend my edits and it’s dropouts, normalizing, and whatnot like recording mono in stereo and in mono, converting one stereo cut to mono for cleanup, and the other song in stereo to get a different vibe after edits and adding subtle reverb to cover micro second dropouts.

Okey doke! I now had two acceptable cleaned up tracks. Not so fast. One song upon CD playback showed correct running time as it played back silently and correctly transitioned to the next audible one. After a second recording attempt with another blank CD . . . another fail. What the hey? After years of doing this, and a hiatus, I must have lost whatever I had Phht! @&$#!

6:30 am comes, and I had too much invested to pack it in. I had a presentation to do later in the day. Now I’m hungry, head upstairs to the biffy, grab some Christmas baking, return to the project and then I read that 16 bit was required. I checked to find the error recording was 24 bit, became concerned that I’d have to repeat the recordings from scratch, and attempted a Hail Mary rendering which converted all to 16 bit. Voila ! A cleaned up 78 that from circa 1926 had life again, and I could catch up on my sleep at 7am. :P
Cheers!
FSB

I found this works very well easy peasy over the years for a quick restoration (sometimes you’ll want to dig deeper with the methods) while other programs are available for little or nothing (like Audacity, but it’s a little more work. Seems to ease up with a little investment):

I'm going to watch some films, and put in some some bass time. I also need to take care of some domestic crap around here.

It's probably a good time to take Apollo out for the Eve. Image

I'm checking my email, and doing some laundry. I may or may not do some jamming on the bass, later. It depends on what my girlfriend wants to do, if she wants to play drums tonight, or not.

Trying to make sense of upcoming medical appointments. Made months ago, suddenly, some have changed, some are with someone I never heard of. I'm wondering how I have an appointment with someone who doesn't technically have access to my medical records. I'm also considering firing my oncologist.
