That’s a great house you two live in, Paul. Nice that it has those that appreciate the history and build of it, It must have been quite a delight to have been one of the first or few to have gas lighting back in the day. I just went through a night with no readily available light until I installed a new breaker for the bedroom this morning, so I can imagine how fantastic that lighting was for the time. We have a gas lantern that we’ve never used. It does work though. Ir’s a double mantel Coleman.
That claw foot tub must be pretty cool, and the window in a closet is really interesting. That must be unique.

Is your heating a boiler, gas, or other? The once 100 year old house we were in used a boiler, but gas for the stove.

As far as the bathroom, we had what looked like an original antique faucet with white and black hot and cold label ceramic caps on on the handles. That was until a family guest accidentally flipped one off and down the drain it went never to be seen again. Needless to say it was irreplaceable
In April of this year we conveniently stayed in an over a century old Bed and Breakfast below ground outside entrance suite in a historical newspaper owner’s mansion. That was in our old neighbourhood just blocks away from our former home on the coast.

I agree old drafting and plans would be a treat to have, Paul.

Yup! Those old homes are pretty neat, a bundle of fun, a lot of work before and after, and a challenge to keep them original.

Too bad they don’t come with old guitars; but, I bet the acoustics are varied and have character in that home of yours.
Enjoy.

We have a gas boiler, with radiator heaters throughout the house. Last winter, there was a gas outage here, which was a real drag. Luckily, we still had electricity, but absolutely no hot water, and no stove. https://patch.com/rhode-island/newport/ ... 00-newport I probably did mention something about it when it happened, I'm sure. We wound up getting some extra electric space heaters, and I had to clean myself with 91% rubbing alcohol, since it was too cold for a cold shower. :P

I seem to recall that, Paul. Thanks, for the memory jog. That gas outage must’ve been a frustration.

I’ve read that it has happened on this side of the border; but, AFAIK it’s never happened around us.

Using alcohol instead of a shower doesn’t sound all tha great either, Paul. I have boxes of alcohol wipes, and that scrub down would take me forever.

The worst part was there wasn't any heat, unless we drove around in the car, and was pretty cold during that time. The alcohol wasn't too bad, once I got a system worked out to do that. It did the job, at least. I suppose if I were one of those Polar Bear Club people, I could have handled a cold shower, but I'm far from that. Living the majority of my life in Florida will do that to you, I guess. :P I don't know how they do that, but my toque's off to them to being able to do that. :P

I too grew up in warmer weather where they have the Polar Bear club. Here we let the local real Polar Bears do the icy dip.

I might try it in the Pacific Northwest for a second or two, but never in the North Atlantic which was cold enough in summer to chill me out. I watched others swim in the middle of the Atlantic where the warm Gulf Stream cut a path, however. We had dolphins, divers, and shark lookouts with guns until the poisonous Man O’ War drifted in with up to 165 feet (usually around 30 feet) of tendrils.

If you change your mind about dipping into cold water you might want to meet up with our local resident leading expert Dr.Popsicle who proudly wears a toque and has trained NASA and many more professionals and the general public. This is the training we get:

Now ya know. :D

I went for a long walk, now I'm going to watch some films, and put in some bass time.

I was actually impressed there were people walking around without toques, but then again, I've seen people around here walking around wearing shorts and there's snow all over the place. Usually, they're coming from somewhere like the Irish American Athletic Club, which is some odd name for a bar that's here, unless pounding Guinness is a sport. :P

Sounds like my kinda place. Count me in. Betcha it rocks tonight. They probably celebrate New Year’s when Dublin does the count down, and then again later when it’s Rhode Island’s turn. I’ll continue the tradition when it gets here.

Oh yeah, you should see what happens around here when it's St. Patrick's Day. :P I remember either last year, or the year before that, the police actually had a mobile drunk tank unit with some sort of large truck parked by the docks where the harbormaster office and ferry docks are. If you want to do some interesting people observing, that's the time to do that. :P

May or may not do some jamming on the bass. It depends on how my girlfriend feels, if she wants to play the drums or not.

I'm going to jam on the bass, then go out for some Chinese takeout.

I just finished some coffee, after a great New Year's Day dinner the daughter cooked up for us. The best London Broil I ever had in my life.

When I make a steak, I usually just season it with salt, pepper, onion, and garlic powder, then melt some I Can't Believe It's Not Butter on it when it's finishing up, since my girlfriend doesn't like to use real butter, or we haven't been using any sort of steak sauce with it, because they usually have some sort of sugar in those. Sugar doesn't agree with her, either, and I figured it probably wouldn't hurt for me to avoid it, as well. I miss having a gas grill, though. I'd much rather use that then having to stove jockey in the house. Charcoal is too much of a pain in the arse to mess with, even though I know a lot of people prefer that method. I'd rather just crank up some propane and not go through the ritual of getting charcoal going.

Pretty nice to have a daughter. Even nicer to have a pretty daughter that cooks for ya huh, Glenn. Awesome way to bring in the New Year.

Did ya know London Broil is totally North American and not British? I wonder if it’s served as such in London. Friends served us a great hunk of sliced London Broil on our trip to the coast. Gotta love it.

We pretty much season steak the same as you, Paul. Well, almost except we do top it with butter, although that margarine of yours was a staple for years for someone who once lived on a dairy farm. That doesn’t mean we don’t trick out beef in other ways, but our beef tenderloin (when we have it) is usually simple as mentioned with perhaps a touch of red wine and butter sauté. The flank gets the fajita treatment, while others get teriyaki or, perhaps, bbq. Still others get a simple Salish smoked alderwood sea salt sprinkle. It’s west coast indigenous tradition for fish and great for beef too; but, it is strong in that only a pinch is necessary which is fine because it’s hard to get.

I’ll use a gas grill, but charcoal when it’s cold or windy outside because it works better in this case. At times I’ll use both. In the house it’s sear the steaks on all sides in a pan just to keep the juices in, toss ‘em in an oven to cook, flipping them halfway, and maybe finish under the broiler for the last minute, and then do the butter dab.

Made battered fish burgers yesterday and for the first time I kicked things up making the filets with melted Swiss cheese in the oven, then with the fish on a plate I topped that with a little onion and bacon fried hash browns mixed in butter, a little sea salt, and a dab of ketchup. This sat over a the bottom of a burger bun already spread with a mixture of sliced red onions tossed in coleslaw dressing, some cream cheese, a touch of horse radish, lemon juice, and a sprinkle of sugar to reduce the sour lemon and strength of the onions, and finished with a sesame burger bun top (bun tops and bottoms were butter (optional) toasted in a pan like a cinnamon bun to keep them crisp). Fish and fried potatoes all in one. :P
Having morning coffee, cinnamon toast and some home made blueberry jam that I received for Christmas and, though I prescribe to just cinnamon toast and butter, the blueberry combo works nicely. :D
