That’s great, Marky. My dad was terrific too, although away a lot. He wasn’t into the wild woods as much as me, neither is Mrs. FSB. (good for hanging out with the guys or peace and quiet, but she’s great once she gets dragged). My outdoorsy mother coaxed my father to take us camping. I think the bear that chased him up a tree in front of my kid brother and me made that ‘dislike for the outdoors’ decision for him.

I think the bear just wanted to give them a little "hug".

Hey, it couldn't be any worse than drinking Beer30, which was some cheap beer they had (I haven't seen in in the stores in years, which isn't a bad thing) that I made the foolish decision, out of either curiosity, or masochism, maybe both, that I drank a 6 pack of many moons ago. I swear to your, even though it didn't taste that horrible (no worse than Natural Light, albeit maybe more of some weird, grape chemical after taste,) it actually physical hurt me like I swallowed the can, itself. I don't know what was in that crap, and I can handle ridiculous amounts of alcohol, but that was some rough stuff. They'd probably wouldn't even allow it in your country for health violations, I'll bet. :P It might make a good drain clog remover, I don't know, but I highly recommend not touching that crap, if it's even still on the market.
Thanks, for the warning, Paul. I’ll stay away from that stuff the next time I cross the border. Sounds delicious. Glad you survived. That was pretty drastic.

Years ago I might have been in danger of having that. When I sailed over to Washington, I and five or six of the crew would make it to the beer store as soon as we went ashore. Then we’d each grab strange six packs and a carton of smokes being careful to not carry back duplicates. Back on the deck we’d toss beers and cigarettes all night drinking and smoking ourselves silly. That put a whole new slant on being sea sick in the morning. You and your Beer30 would have been a hit, and fit right in. Toque and all.

I remember my dad telling me when he was in the Navy, which was he was in from 1950-1953 on an LST, they'd make garbage wine, or alcohol from various fruits or whatnot, because you can make booze from anything that ferments.

 Well, that was a pretty severe way to get your happy time on, Paul. Great story. I know that booze was sometimes smuggled on board, but our mates in the U.S. Navy were known worldwide as a dry Navy. All the Commonwealth navies and many others were not. Traditionally, some were rationed rum or gin daily, and alchohol was brought on board by the breweries at times with occasions to have a party on board whether for dignitaries or the public or for the crew to boost morale because we pouted without it just to get our way, In any case (pun) the crew always got treated, by age old regulations rumoured to have been brought about by threat of mutiny, when officers had alcohol for these functions, and alcohol was a privilege in commissioned and non commissioned officer’s messes. Later, occasional bars on ships were established as rum wasn’t always preferred. Foreign navies were often happy to tie up alongside one of these booze buckets, :P
Whether reserve or regular, many countries (including ours) had (and still do have) completely volunteer armed forces in those heavy drinking and war days when conscription was active in the States and elsewhere. The times were different then, and attitudes varied. Those that volunteer tend to stay in it for a long haul, become older and hopefully wiser, and you and the Navy doesn’t want to include the brig for an extended stay so more leniency and respect came with it. That didn't stop one sailor from driving a motor scooter off the end of a dock and into the ocean though,

Today’s servicemen are still rough and ready, but most are not over indulgers like in your dad’s and my dad’s and, by association, my day. Combat readiness and theatres of action means a whole different thing these days as well.

Still the tradition will always be found if you look for it, just as with your dad, Paul. Sailors and soldiers are pretty adept at finding ways to do and procure most anything, especially if denied. McHale’s Navy with a moonshine still in the TV series is not too far from the truth.

Okay. Maybe, a little bit.
I’ll have to catch this movie version. Looks pretty good. It passed me by.

Yeah, I imagine they'd have something rigged up in the engine room, where my dad's post was. By the way, this is the actual ship my dad was on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Bullo ... y_(LST-509) I guess it was used up into the Vietnam War. He was in the Navy during the Korean War, but wasn't stationed over there. Although, he said they trained Marines that did go there. He did go to Greenland for some reason. I guess there's some sort of base there, or was.

I never seen that movie, or even know they made a remake of it. I remember seeing the original TV show with Ernest Borgnine in it.

That’s quite the LST, Paul. It must have been a great experience for your father. I sailed on a variety of craft from WWII ships, to harbour craft, to 60s warships, so I can relate. Very cool vessel. I enjoyed the read, thanks,

My father saw convoy action in WWII, left the Navy after the war, and returned for action in Korea where his ship shot trains coming out of tunnels, amongst other things, He stayed until the late 60s.

One of my ships (the latter version) was partly the reason for today’s ant-submarine technology where cabled variable depth sonar (VDS) defeats the thermal layer with sound waves from the ships and from aircraft such as shipboard helicopters.

That one had some history to it, as well. I guess they both lasted about the same time, too. You know, I just realized that the pic of my dad's ship in the Wikipedia article was titled it was entering NAB Little Creek, Norfolk, Virginia in the spring of 1951, which means he was on it when that was taken. We also lived in Virginia, where I was born.

That’s pretty neat, Paul. I and my family almost got to live in Norfolk. My father had the opportunity to teach anti-submarine tactics for a few years; but, my mother had other ideas. I guess she thought I’d stand out from the crowd with my toque.
I finally made it to that huge base anyhow on that very same destroyer that I posted, in 1967 with two newer destroyer escorts, Our journey took us from Nova Scotia to BC through the canal.

Day and night we watched ships big and small vacating one by one non stop in a single file leaving for ‘Nam. It never stopped. It was quite a sight, and it gave us all pause to realize how serious things had developed, how tough it was for those in Asia, and for those going, wondering how many would return, wishing that they all would, and how lucky and how appreciative we all were on this side of the pond. I was amazed at the variety of craft, each with a specific job to do. Many held celebrity status, especially since a lot served in WWII and Korea. The reserve fleet gathering dust and these tough old ladies found new life being needed where the action was. I know they all got a big welcoming when they reached their destination.

Some fellas from the Nautilus had a car and took me to see the town of Norfolk which was a nice gesture. Had a great time.

My dad's ship wound up going to Vietnam, from what I've read. I had a cousin who did a couple of tours there in the Marines, which wouldn't that have been something if he had been on that ship at one point, since Marines do work with the Navy. I suppose it could have been possible, but I wouldn't even know how to find out, since he died in 1978 from falling off a balcony, either by accident, or maybe pushed off. There was some speculation there. It's kind of ironic, since he was in serious heavy combat and survived that, and had that happen.

I went for a walk earlier this morning, then went to the grocery store when it opened to get a few things. Now, I'm checking email, and other stuff.

Well, since it's a wash out with all of the rain today, I won't be going for a walk, so I'll just watch some films and put in some bass time.
