It's about time to feed the dog, and get things going for the day around here I guess.

Going to go for a long walk, the store, and watch a couple of films, and put in some bass time.

I just read about the top ten dangerous places in Canada. Not always big cities. We have a mining town with 1400 plus or minus citizens that made the list as did two other small towns here in the province. It’s now reported that we’ve had 41 murders, including innocents, this year in less than a million populated Winnipeg. Compare that to 2.7 million populated Chicago and 451 murders (50 less than in 2018). Our problem includes a lot of outsiders and new Canadians involved as well as long time locals.

Meth has been a big escalating contributor. More weapons from guns to machetes are being round up, but they are being replaced as fast as they are removed, and policing is targeted for cuts in 2020. Fortunately, we live on the better side of the tracks, but the goofiness is creeping in here too. I’m thinking it’s time to get your neighbour and his friends up here to tame the Wild West, Marky. Either that, or we’re going to put hockey teams in the streets.

When we moved out here, the population was 8,000. That was 14 years ago. Today it's over 88,000! That's great for housing values because following the people came all the great shopping and restaurants. But, the crime came with it too. I recently saw a video of a local senior couple being beaten as they took their trash bin to the street. Four punks punched and kicked them when they were already down. They kicked the woman just like they did the man. I just don't get it.

That's why I carry almost every time I leave my house. If I were a thug, I would consider me to be an easy target. A crippled senior. Wow, easy pickins. I don't intend to make it so easy.

That’s terrible about the Seniors or anybody, Marky. Same problems here. As you know, in Canada we have a reputation of not carrying. My background includes guns since the age of 10, and my trade was responsible for small arms in the Navy. I passed up the chance to inherit a Luger from a family member, and it irritated me that it was restricted. I even thought to get it fixed for display, but the trouble and history wasn’t worth the effort. I can understand love and passion for those things. Too bad twisted individuals do too. :?
That said, times are changing. I don’t deny others in their passion or need, but even as a former NRA affiliate member, I do think changes are in order, but that’s another story best addressed elsewhere. My age and health can totally relate to your position, Marky. My concern for carrying is the possibility of others getting the firearm. Danged if you do and danged if you don’t. I prefer to get even by using what’s between my ears, Too bad others who need to do that, like politicians and activists, aren’t doing the same.

Take the morons off the streets, and put the guns back on display, like in the full Winchester and Remington plus collection in Cody Wyoming.

Been there done that twice. Melt down the rest and make boat anchors.

Take it from me, with a childhood shooting award on the wall, a past Wildlife Association membership, hunting books on the shelf, a bullseye or two or . . . , that sweet smell of cordite, and no guns in the house YMMV, When the going gets tough the tough get going. It’s time to stop handing out the milk and cookies.

In my school they set up a ring and you could duke it out with gloves. The loser got a reprieve.

I think throwing these trouble makers into the prison yard and letting them shoot it out would be just punishment. I wouldn’t be concerned about the rights issues. I think they might reconsider whether the alternative to freedom is something they would want. Might as well include the sympathizers and rehab advocates. There might be no takers.

Gary - I was given my own first real gun by my father at age 10. It is a .22LR Marlin bolt action rifle with detachable magazine. I still have it. I'm no longer able to go hunting but I enjoy shooting sports.

We may disagree a bit here but I think that all the anti-gun laws in the world will never disarm the bad guys. I believe that criminals are predisposed to crime and they will obtain firearms by any means possible. If someone is willing to murder another human being, I don't think that anti-gun laws will stop them from acquiring guns. Just my opinion, for what it's worth, and I certainly do not wish to start a debate on gun control. :)

I have an easy day planned. I need to catch up on some reading and play guitar.

Hey there, Marky. Actually, we’d probably have more in agreement. Even I had a Stetson in my youth. I mean take the guns away from the morons that slip through the cracks before they play bang bang shoot ‘em up. “Git ‘em up, round ‘em up posse. Yippee Ki Yay”. Might as well do that with irresponsible licensed sellers too. Everybody doesn’t get to carry pearl handled pistols like MacArthur on base.

There are morons in every walk of life, and this is what I meant. We’ll never stop the hornets from leaving the hive and yes, there will always be more, but it doesn’t mean we are totally helpless or that we should give them an environment in which to thrive. We might even have bees in a well kept hive, I just don’t want them in the house. I certainly wouldn’t want my kids to disturb the nest. YMMV. Just sayin’.

I think shooting and hunting are fine sports. I discourage fur for profit, but not for survival with those like our indigenous up North, etc. (tough talk where trapping is a major employer and concern). and I support sensible sustainable use of our wildlife. Duck hunting? I don’t get it. Kinda daffy to me. Wet and miserable for my taking. I’ll leave that to the happy pluckers out there.
I once paid for a Wisconsin museum look where I and Mrs. FSB were surprised to see a very large taxidermy display of everything the guy could round up. Nothing was out of bounds. It was Canadian animals and birds large and small like a butterfly collection. Some smaller than your hand. Needless to say I walked out disgusted, and I had a cousin who was an award taxidermist from Calgary and I know close friends that are guides here and on the coast and they all would have puked. But, even though I love venison, I gave up hunting because I didn’t want to be targeted in a concentrated area by crazy lunatics, some raised with a different cultural attitude and experience and no sense. Assault rifles and the sort are best left at a controlled range IMHO, but that debate is better elsewhere as you alluded to, Marky. There’s far better and appropriate arms out there anyhow. Most knowledgeable enthusiasts would, I think, agree.

Protection by carrying is important, unless one can use their brain, which isn’t always possible or feasible as you point out in all circumstances. I get that. Some, however don’t use their brain even after possessing. Now who’s the wildlife? Just before I left BC I considered an over and under, and was about to buy a break down rifle like the Bush pilots carry, because I was often alone fishing by logging roads amongst many bears and cougars (estimated 2,000 plus or minus of each on an island), and wolves, and it’s easy to get lost in the rain forest. It’s not exactly the Rocky Mountains in this area, and I’m not threatened by curious prairie dogs.
“Insert the Deliverance banjo here.”

Marlin, huh? Now that’s a pretty nice Dad, and rifle, Marky.

I got caught up with my reading so it's Strat time. 8) Gary - thanks, my dad was pretty nice. He and I never had one harsh word between us. Not even once. I was a pretty good kid and he was a terrific dad so it was always good times together.

That’s great, Marky. My dad was terrific too, although away a lot. He wasn’t into the wild woods as much as me, neither is Mrs. FSB. (good for hanging out with the guys or peace and quiet, but she’s great once she gets dragged). My outdoorsy mother coaxed my father to take us camping. I think the bear that chased him up a tree in front of my kid brother and me made that ‘dislike for the outdoors’ decision for him.
Bears are one animal you don’t want to second guess.

I just had two interesting conversations. First let say I’m not a wine snob, but having come from wine country, having racked a minor collection (to beat price increases which tend to double and triple), having drunk it all 12 years later, and with 50 years of vino in my blood, I am probably more knowledgeable than the average tippler. I pride myself in knowing that more money raises the chance that a good wine might pass one’s lips, but not always. Luck will come your way at any price, but to choose an unknown wine consistently with success is an art in itself. I take great pleasure in doing that (as for beer - Whoo boy! That's a whole other barrel); but, I sinfully splurge for the good stuff at other times for special occasions or that sizzling steak. :D One thing is certain. If you indulge you’ll drink way more bad than good and that’s a good lesson in itself. Crazy how some like bad drinks though. Me for example today.
Okay, back to the two conversations. I have a few bottles of wine I picked up here and there for those special occasions. Mrs. FSB asked if we should pop one of them. Not being a special occasion, I suggested a 1993 rare BC ice wine (when popularity was being established for sweet ice wines) that my brother gave me for a birthday. Uh oh! A plum coloured White Reisling? I tag all my bottles and wrote 12 years to be a best before date. Dang! Missed that one. I called the Liquor/Wine store for a second opinion. Pour it out was suggested. Had they carried the brand this $57 wine would get a replacement. Money is one thing, but this was a free bee. This wine is irreplaceable in vintage. :? I’ve never experienced such a thing (Rhone , Burgundy, and Cab are more my liking, but it’s all good including certain whites). I seemed to have had a vague recollection that there can be a natural change that breaks down the wine or alters the properties, being that wine is not equal, storage varies, but such a change can keep and can’t make wine drinkable (although not optimum quality). I don’t give up easily. I know this bottle was rotated correctly to keep the cork moist (which is one good reason to ditch the cork). It was kept cool in the basement, and stayed sealed. Grapes can change and ripen, and that usually means a darker colour, with or without sediment. Chemical reaction can add or take away from that. What to do?

A call to a very helpful knowledgeable young lady at the Winery, confirmed my thoughts. The Ice Wine was held 14 years past prime storage, others like it have survived 30 years, the colour was deemed to have come from oxidation, a natural effect, and even though not desirable but occasional, it can be proven to be drinkable. Here I am drinking interesting 1993 wine 26 years old! Tastes fine. I hope I wake up tomorrow.

Hey! Why worry? They drink wine from sunken Spanish Galleons. Uh oh. Sometimes not.
Cheers!

Hey, it couldn't be any worse than drinking Beer30, which was some cheap beer they had (I haven't seen in in the stores in years, which isn't a bad thing) that I made the foolish decision, out of either curiosity, or masochism, maybe both, that I drank a 6 pack of many moons ago. I swear to your, even though it didn't taste that horrible (no worse than Natural Light, albeit maybe more of some weird, grape chemical after taste,) it actually physical hurt me like I swallowed the can, itself. I don't know what was in that crap, and I can handle ridiculous amounts of alcohol, but that was some rough stuff. They'd probably wouldn't even allow it in your country for health violations, I'll bet. :P It might make a good drain clog remover, I don't know, but I highly recommend not touching that crap, if it's even still on the market.

Thanks, for the warning, Paul. I’ll stay away from that stuff the next time I cross the border. Sounds delicious. Glad you survived. That was pretty drastic.

Years ago I might have been in danger of having that. When I sailed over to Washington, I and five or six of the crew would make it to the beer store as soon as we went ashore. Then we’d each grab strange six packs and a carton of smokes being careful to not carry back duplicates. Back on the deck we’d toss beers and cigarettes all night drinking and smoking ourselves silly. That put a whole new slant on being sea sick in the morning. You and your Beer30 would have been a hit, and fit right in. Toque and all.
