I'm doing a bunch of laundry. I may or may not go for a walk later.

I'm about finishing up with the laundry, since it pretty much takes at least 8 hours with 4 loads, with each load going almost two hours (I do regular wash, not any quick ones,) since we have one of those HE front loading machines. I remember the old school top loader machines never took as long, but I guess they also did beat the hell out of your clothes with the agitator. I do have t-shirts that are at least two years old and have held out really well and not even really faded yet, so maybe there is something to that.

Working on recording. Miami Mike has helped me greatly. My head was spinning trying to figure out Studio One (I gave up on Pro Tools long ago) but, with Mike's excellent guidance, I recorded my first real backing track this morning. When my son gets up, I'll add my playing to it. 8) Thanks, Mike!!!

Going to go for a long walk, then watch some films and put in some bass time.

Hey, Paul. We still have a gas dryer that won’t quit. Same for the top loader. I’m of the school that if it ain’t broke don’t replace it because your wishes may not come true with today’s builds. Of course, I’m lucky. Mrs. FSB won’t let me wash clothes after I had an I Love Lucy experience with soap suds attacking our shoes from under a laundromat washer before we got married. Phew! That plan worked.
That’s great you’ve got the recording software working for you rather than the other way around, Marky. :D It can be pretty daunting and time consuming for sure. Anyone with pro studio experience will tell you time management, especially with shared studios, is something that can give you a distinct advantage in getting that production delivered and it opens doors for your others to be made. It will allow you to make decisions in a timely matter.

I asked for advice from a well known music show producer back when I worked in my 20s. He tried to accept first takes if it was good. Real good mind you, because you’ll know when that happens. Three takes as an option, one for you as the engineer and/or the producer, one to satisfy the artist and one for both of you need be. You can regulate yourself in a similar fashion. Obviously, exceptions exist for a variety of reasons, perhaps with others; but, he felt no more than six takes are ever necessary if everyone does their job. This can apply to post production tracks as well.

Doubts? There are some great live albums, and many hit songs of yesteryear that were one takes, Three to six takes in a controlled environment? You do the math. Of course talent and ability plays a part; but, there are some pretty simple examples all the way around.
Exceptions should be rare. We’ve all heard or done more takes, even to the ridiculous amount. He said that if you do six takes you are unlikely to have any improvement and, with a progressive mindset, a good take is more than likely to come within those initial 3 recordings. It definitely should be in those six recordings, technical issues aside. Also know that some issues might have post production solutions. Reach for the best with the least, and put a limit on the rest.

Time management will pay off big time if you set some standards from the get go. Engineers from Polydor who worked alongside me with portable gear seemed to limit their takes in a similar fashion. This is especially important when the takes are disjointed and piece mealed. You don’t want a mess in your hands to sort out,

Keeping notes is a must and very helpful. You can refer to your settings instrument wise later. This is a tall order, worse if you don’t have the info if and when you wish you had. I found a handy quick shortcut is to document with photos or, for the odd occasion, maybe a voice memo. Note your pre-production and post production in case you lose, decide to redo, or later choose to reproduce something. Sure you can save a lot of those details and more with software settings and software notation; but, will it always be there for future consideration? What if you change or update Daws? What if your computer takes a hike? What if a plugin messes up your Daw like I just experienced? Screen shots might be handy. Time spent is time saved for those creative juices and your final product now or future wise. The best tools, however, are in your mind and in your heart and soul.

Enjoy the whole experience, Marky. Nice that Mike jumped in to help. :D
Break a leg.

Of course, none of the above need apply. It depends on your wants and needs.
YMMV

I like your idea to take a picture. It's a quick and easy way to document things and can be categorized and saved in folders for easy recall. I have notes everywhere in 2 notebooks and post-its all over. Thanks for the tip and encouragement! :D

My pleasure, Marky. I’ve taken photos of my mixer setups. Not perfect, but better than writing it all out with a manual setup, I also scroll through my Mustang IV displays and do similar. Works pretty good. :D

It’s a woman thing, Glenn. I always ask my wife, “Where is this secret special school where all women go to learn these things?”

That lunch trip sounds like me taking Mrs. FSB to an ice cream parlour. I could go shopping and return a half hour later, and she’ll still be there trying to make a flavour decision. That’s why we get Gelato at the Italian Deli and bakery. I shop, she chooses and then I choose.

My favourite is when you say, “What are you going to order?” and they say, after some time looking at the offerings, “I don’t know. What are you going to have?” I never ask her, because I never want the raw veggies and Ranch dressing.

I may or may not go for a long walk today, since it's pretty friggin' cold out right now, and I'm feeling kind of lazy. Either way, I'm going to watch a couple of films and put in some bass time.
