Doing the final part of my taxes with only a few entries to make for completion. Wouldn’t ya know it? Just when I was about to wrap it up, I ran into a snag. Offices are closed on the weekend when I need them so I am in a lengthy reading mode to no avail, and I have just about exhausted resources having gobbledegook info supplied and no luck on the Net, both without addressing the answer to my needs. $&@#! :?
I’m ready to dump some tea in the Red River. That too could be a challenge as it’s frozen over. Perhaps, I should use some ice tea.

Crap weather, so I'm going to watch some films, and put in some bass time.

I might actually be able to go out for a walk for once. The weather isn't too cold, and it's not raining. Either way, I'll have to go out to do some grocery shopping.

Wondering if my making an advance recent booking for a flight was such a good idea. For the first time, I intentionally went out of my way to not book two particular kinds of aircraft. This was prior to, but within a week of, Ethiopia’s major crash of late. Flying is safer than driving, but we choose our cars, why not our plane?

My first flight was 60 years ago at the age of 10 (back wth the Wright Brothers). Since then more than 10 types of aircraft have carried my seat. This includes Air Force transportation (same as commercial aircraft) with seats facing backwards looking at the tail section (a safety theory), and jump seats on a Hercules. I used to love flying, but the experience has now become questionable, including the boarding shuffles, comfort, free peanuts, etc. Flight delays and changing connections that have become a norm.

The last flight I took was delayed. After a half hour an announcement was made that a minor non essential (?) repair was needed. No time was estimated. After a failed repair, replacement was announced - another delay. No part was available locally (even with Boeing down the street), so an extended delay. Another plane was simultaneously flying tourists from Jamaica to Toronto and, after a refueling, it would be the replacement flight from Winnipeg to Vancouver once it got here. Makes me wonder how many non essential repairs there are and aren’t and how they can be handled with profit and safety involved. That initial aircraft, by the way, was a 737.

In this neck of the woods we are only serviced mainly by two national airlines partially because of government interference. Choice of aircraft are similar and smaller alliances sometimes come into play. One carrier has a glut of older aircraft, and the other has more options, but not always advantageous. Prices are similar, on sale or otherwise. Alliances often come without guarantee.

With the current trend of design for cost savings and competitive deals under the table I’m ready to take a longer flight with the dependable DC-3 were that possible. They have nostalgic trains, maybe the DC-3 needs a comeback. At least the reputation speaks for itself. No in-flight audio/video display, coloured led lighting, WiFi, or designer interior? Phtt! How did we do without? I can’t believe we flew in comfort with a real silverware porcelain plated meal throughout, and relative safety in those days.

How did I do with the flight booking? No Boeing (I never liked the popular 737 as Mrs. FSB can attest), and I gave my suspicions from the early get go when I first heard and felt under my feet it’s distinct impact of landing gear retracting amongst other dislikes, observations, and comparisons. Two bookings are connecting island hops with a government subsidized other make less than stellar record STOL plane; but, their flights are short and not over the Rockies like the main trip. There’s always the chance of plane replacements at anytime, however.

The fact that economics, management, and politics on and off the field have presently kept North America from a present Boeing safety grounding that others around the world have introduced doesn't give me any faith in the system. Promotion of a recent pending aircraft software update is encouraging in times of yet to be proven investigations? Okey dokey. Hardly qualification for a cheerful barrel roll. IMHO

I’ll be having a great conversation with my best buddy on the coast who is an accomplished Air Canada pilot who flies into airports around the world . . . if he and I get there.

FSB

Am I over cautious? Maybe, but that goes against the grain of my past adventures. I like to have some control and wouldn’t want a leaky boat either, and that goes for some questionable cruise ships - even new ones.

Meanwhile, I believe I have the answer; although, freezing temps over the Rockies puts a stop to that. :P

RIP Buddy Holly

I put in some bass time, and watching a film. I could have gone out for a walk tonight, but I wound up not going.

There's the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and drunken madness today in Newport, so we're going to venture out later and witness the carnage. Thames Street will be littered with plastic green beads and projectile vomit. :P Last year, it was insane. I'll bet they'll have the mobile drunk tank set up again, as well.

 Dang! This Irish with a touch of English and Ruskie Canadian couple missed out. They have their nerve starting a day before without me. Have a great time, Paul, and I wish you all a great St.Patrick’s Day for tomorrow whether you celebrate with a potato, barley sandwich and, perhaps, a side order of Irish Whiskey or enjoy the music of the day.
For me it truly is a great day to kick back. With my earlier flight mention, I have a commitment and a pleasure to surprise visit my aging mother (96) on the coast shortly. Traveling in Canada (at least from the middle of the country) is no cheap task as we could have made a few trips south offshore or to Europe or Asia for less. Many moderate accommodations are now older less than desirable second hand flipped accommodations built in the sixties and seventies, some renovated and some not. Vancouver (Hong Kong’s clone with a taste of Singapore complete with the number one ski resort), has a lot of higher priced accommodation from skyscrapers to motor inns and condos to B&Bs. Trending is investment from offshore with non dwelling owners (this is newsworthy and controversial of late), and the practice takes up a lot of the preferred location, and adds to availability and cost issues. Add to the fact that where I’m going the territory is spread out geographically mostly separated by bridges, etc. Yada yada.

Spring break and a holiday in a tourist zone takes my options down. I couldn’t get a rental car to pick up from an island airport to spend some days with friends, take a ferry, and drop the wheels off on the mainland a week later as planned. This presented an unexpected extra timely flight, a concern but added. I now had more car deals to find and confirm on the mainland, and there was a challenge for suitable accommodation where location is important, blah blah. Thankfully, I searched well in advance because it proved to be difficult even with that advantage.

In the end a nationally recognized historic 1885 old island mansion came to the rescue to provide a room complete with fireplace and period correct antiques throughout . It is also a well kept Inn with brewskies, cool architecture, and more. This ended my three day search and coordination for a soon to come 14 day stay shared on both sides of Juan de Fuca Strait. Whoo Hoo!

Here’s the cool factor. It’s next to a castle where I used to have high school meetings, in a neighbourhood (a few streets over) that I grew up in, and two streets over from the 100 year old home I left before coming here in the ‘Peg back in 2000. Right in the centre of town. Besides, it was a steal complete with breakie, and less than acquiring a decent downtown hotel room. We might even have a patio door leading to a garden. Oddly, I never knew it existed as it is hidden behind bushes and gardens.

The past couple of years have been obligatory and the trips were set by timelines. This trip is more relaxed and on our terms, so we’re looking forward to the pleasant historical side trip even though our home is decorated mid century modern.
Today is a day off and time to catch up on the Forum.

Have a good one. :D

Thank you Fender for posting the video of Brian Wilson. I always loved the Beach Boys, he is an extremely talented man.

First time on in a while, so I thought I would reply to a bunch of zero reply threads.
Seems the 1st post lag time is worse than normal, thinking 72 hours should be a reasonable goal.

Went for a walk at noon while the snow and ice melted around us in -9°C /15°F weather. Not really that warm considering the temperature here at 10 o’clock rose to 2°C/36°F! it’s a long time since we’ve had that. Now that’s the way to start Spring (after using the snow rake to pull excess snow and ice off the roof today). :D

I have to walk more flatland in prep for walking the hills on the coast. :P
