I went for a long walk today, and now I'm putting in some bass time.

I've backed up some files on my computer. I have a bad feeling I might have to wipe the hard drive and start everything over. Friggin' Microannoy...

Well, been there done that, so my sympathy goes out to you. Your challenge is a rough way to end the year, Paul. Sorry to hear about that. Here’s hoping your pain will be minimal.

In this day of AI and striving to reach Mars, you'd think home and mobile computing would be better developed and better managed than what it is.

Voice control? Whoo hoo, boo hoo. I could walk into my dark home in the early 80s, call out “Party!”, and lights would turn on, dim, and (before CD popularity) the reel to reel, cassette, radio or LP would play after the rack of equipment was automatically turned on to blast music into the speakers. Had the wood fireplace been gas, Hal would have lit that too and done more, like place a phone call, after the initial $2000 black polished slab talked to you and asked confirmation questions with his voice and with it’s blue digital text display. A simple “Goodnight!” put the living room to sleep. Fortunately, this magician’s tool was on loan from a friend. Yep! We’ve come a long way in over 30 years.
Meanwhile, tonight we returned home from bringing in the New Year with our friends and returning without Alexa or Google to greet us, but I’m sure they can’t be far behind.
Better, perhaps.? Fun, could be? A big advancement? I wonder what Siri has to say about that. YMMV.

Whatever the case, have a Happy New Year. :D
FSB
On the other hand, if Alexa, Google, Amazon, Siri, Cortana, or Bixby could manage, update, and repair computers or, perhaps, having an affordable robot to sit in, now that would be useful. Lemme see:

1) Cortana (or *other) gets a problem prompt that *Cortana reads aloud.
2) *Cortana requests a fix, and the search automatically begins.
3) The best solution is found and applied; perhaps, with a full backup and retrieval online. Maybe, with a full re-format as needed gathering what is required from an alternative internal disc or from online.
4) With, hopefully, a successful re-format, based on the original, the backup will be recalled and installed.
5) Cortana calls out, “Your computer is operating fine now”. All independent of the typical frustration.
6) Of course the same could be accomplished by removing the OS problem locally altogether. I have a feeling that’s not too far away. Better? Hmmmm.

So far, I haven't had to do anything, but it was better safe than sorry to make sure I have everything saved on a thumb drive, just in case I have to do anything. I'll occasionally use Siri on the iPhone, but mainly to dial a number. Sometimes, it's just friggin' useless otherwise. Either that, or I'm just too well conditioned to just look something else up on my own. :P As for Cortana, I have that disabled, which wasn't easy to do. I had to do a hack to do that, since they don't let you shut it off, otherwise. In fact with Windows 10, they have a lot of BS like that, which is very aggravated. As crappy as Vista was, at least it was more configurable, and didn't have all of this extra garbage attached to it. XP was probably the best one. If I had the money, I'd probably tell Microsoft to piss off, and get an Apple. Although, I've heard their quality control on their laptops hasn't been that great these days, so I don't know. The iPhone seems to be OK.

I went for a long walk tonight and I'm going to put in some bass time. Maybe I might watch a movie, too. I can't wait to get my Ampeg, so I can get that hooked up and going. 8)

Good news for you, Paul that you weren’t positioned to clean out the PC and having to start from scratch.

I haven’t had much hands on Windows 10, but it looks like I’m going to have to psych myself up to accept it. Talk about an ugly desktop interface. Incidentally, I just read that MS Edge was not a winner too, having a recent announcement that it will be dropped, at least in it’s present form, and MS’s upcoming browser will now take on a Google partnership with an MS flavour. Since Google is perched to take over the bulk of the computer goodies and control, maybe the much loved (sic) and fine example of an ethical corporation could be the way to go for an operating system on which to depend on. It’s pretty much a finished deal with the front and back door open.

I think Vista had a lot of unwanted bloatware and, obviously, some downsides, but except for the odd annoyance, not unlike any OS IMHO, it works just fine, unless you’re a gamer or just want a dedicated computer. It’s mainly the plugins, apps, security (what’s that?), and support that is a failure. It must be okay because 3 OSs have been introduced since. and last I looked, my PC does the jobs whether for office or media production, and there’s a lot more in the media computer than should be acceptable (including decent games) YMMV. Besides, it’s not optimized with browsers and such, but that’s the fault of the new OSs not Vista. As for gaming, there are options.

Apple has some good things going for it, and lucky for them they cashed in on a well made OS in comparison. Everything is built with that in mind. It does have one big downfall yet to show it’s ugly head. It is a mature system that has little wiggle room to grow with the times and technology. That is an advantage, but equally a disadvantage that can be pinpointed. It can easily be surpassed, but has the ability, but no assurance, to remain a niche. My Apple iPhone X has issues such as this Forum, and Apple still is not the best for multi-tasking. However, their tablets and laptops are nice, but pricing and other issues are certainly in the news. Apparently, trade agreements will see us with either higher prices or lower quality compromises.

I have a feeling that computers will soon take a major turn, and become better established and connected in their coming direction

Yep! We’re moving in the right direction. At least that’s what we Eloi are led to believe as told by the Morlocks. :P

I’m waiting for your new amp to turn up. I’m not getting one.  Pretty exciting.

I’ll go out to brave 11°F/-12°C and do a little snow cleanup on the car, driveway, and sidewalks. After that fun, I’ll come inside to the heat and see if I can get in a little cardio exercise with the drums, some enjoyment with the Strat and/or acoustic electric, maybe a little tinkling of the keys, and do a little scanning organization in the office. Either that or stretch out in the man cave to watch the projector. Decisions, decisions, decisions. :P

The amp showed up, but I'm waiting for it to warm up in the house before hooking it up. It was pretty cold taking it out of the box. Other than that, everything looks good. It was a non factory sealed box item, which I can't even tell where that was the case, since the original box and anything else looks like it was never opened from the factory, and the amp still had it's plastic bag around it, so it was probably never used for anything, I think. I got a hell of a deal for it, either way. 8)

Hooked up the Ampeg, and played for over an hour. It sounds really good. 8)

I had a feeling when you said you ordered the PF800, it would be the right move replace the Orange with. I'm sincerely glad it's working out ok for ya'. Image

If it's one thing I hate it is looking for a new office chair. I used to be involved in many control room purchases of chairs. These had to have comfort and longevity for extended work hours and a variety of users. Try that for harmony. I know that price does not always give you a guarantee or satisfaction, but it's a start. A good chair will demand a fair chunk of change. The chairs we used to buy would outlast the upholstery. Now it's the opposite.

So, after no success in my adventure to make my seat and back comfy where I don't have to worry about falling to the floor or getting gored by a broken arm or bracket, I decided to take two chairs, modify and fabricate one good one. I took the back material off the sacrificed one, upholstered new armrests to replace the torn ones, removed the arms saving the bolts, fabricated two brackets for the good seat and back on a pedestal, and "Presto Change-O". A new old chair that looks pretty good and is strong for the interim until I get that new chair, if and when I locate it.

I only hope the new one is as good as my current Rube Goldberg.
