Or you could play FSB and jam out. :) Whatever character you choose, I hope he has a fine day!

I have no clue what I'm doing today, other than going for a walk, and get dinner. I guess we'll just see as it goes. :P

Did a little work, got tired of that, and took you up on your suggestion, Marky. Watched the Jets/Predators hockey game (Go Jets!), while practicing and jamming a bit with backing tracks. Now I’m all played out.
Now I grabbed some cinnamon toast and I’m catching up on today’s global news before I head off to dreamland for the latest story.

Hope the day went well for everyone. I had a great one today.

I have to learn a new song that I'm going to play bass on for a recording.

I’m being lazy today. I’m thinking of playing with my DAW because I have some professional jazz, blues, rock, funky Euro club, and novelty reggae/rap type backing tracks produced overseas for some original songs/lyrics that I wrote, and they’ll have my vocals added to replace the existing ones for play on this side of the pond. I haven’t been physically able to pull it off yet, so maybe today or at least soon. Then there will be some futzing with the mix which I doubt will be as good as I received; but, nothing ventured nothing gained. I am no Smokey Robinson or Rick Hall of Muscle Shoals (who died this year at 85. January 2, 2018). However, I am original, I have enough experience to make me dangerous, and I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Friends and family make good liars. It’s all their fault for pushing me into it. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. :P Recording and writing a variety of originals both with my playing and with others is part of my long set aside bucket list. I’m not looking to be rich and famous, after all I’m already famous being on Google’s data collection, and as for being rich, nobody wants to pay me.
Meanwhile, I’ll have to work on my twang for Country. Should be easy in that I can ride a horse and had cap guns.
Take me home country roads.

I really wanted to go to the ARIZONA HORSEMAN’S CHALLENGE & EXPO today but the weather was bad. It was hot with high winds and blowing dust all day long. That's not a good mix for me or my son's asthma. I sure hope tomorrow is better.

I did a couple of takes on a new track, tonight. I'm not sure how they'll pan out, since I just came up with the part right as I recorded it, but at least I have the idea down, and can always redo it if need be.

I looked that up, Marky. I can see where the ARIZONA HORSEMAN’S CHALLENGE & EXPO would be interesting. I always get a kick when tractors are a draw. As a kid, I spent a short time on a mixed dairy farm in Nova Scotia in an area where they had plowing competitions between tractors of the day and teams of oxen. I can’t say how that worked, but I’m guessing they added governors or something to limit the small tractor pull. On the west coast they raced quarter horses on a 1/4 mile against cars from a dead start, and here they have rodeos and a Threshers Festival that brings out vintage steam tractors, and old harvesting equipment amongst new and old tractors and combines.

Here we have so much more dirt in the air amongst infrastructure and urban sprawl. This dry spell is really beating anyone that has breathing issues, so I can guess how that creates a problem for you down in Arizona. Sometimes, I think the dirty 30s revival is just around the corner as water restrictions have hit some towns. More trees and less dirt I say . . . if they can grow. I had to clean my bushes because of the dirt accumulated over the recent months. On the other hand it’s not 40 below.
We actually have a lot of trees in the city; but, after many year’s of growth, thousands are currently being destroyed by disease like Dutch Elm and infestation by beetles and more. Ah, but at least in our back yard I planted an evergreen seedling that is now 43 years old and 43 feet high to give me shade. It is bound to outlast me, and I didn’t need a tractor. :P

It’s gonna be great, Paul. I was told by the great Googa Mooga who was in touch with Yorick. :D

Takes are a funny thing, Paul. I thought I’d share this experience with ya. It helped me. YMMV.

I’ve worked with perfectionists that would sometimes do six or more takes driving others crazy. Supporting talent might have had a great performance passed by or others were über talented that every take was good or dang near perfect.

Then I worked with a well known director who’s résumé included Sonny and Cher, The Hudson Brothers, The Smothers Brothers, and more. He told us that 3 takes were enough (5 was a stretch, and usually just for him). A couple of years later two fellas from Polydor told me that 3 takes were plausible with a possible (but frowned upon) 5 being enough. As they explained it, out of order multi-tracking a large group or orchestra means selecting a lot of keepers at the time of and possibly after a review and/or mixdown. Combined experience shows that a majority of keepers fall in that one to three takes, with exception in the three to five group, and less above five. While it is true more takes could give you a better choice in your mind, the actual best may not be all that different or better from other’s perspectives. Spontaneity often loses out. Methods of pre-production, production, and post-production will have some bearing; but, generally the 3 take procedure can apply. 3 takes in pre and three in post . . . well, that’s a lot of work and choice as you can see.
The other reason for setting a goal of less takes is that this process is thought to breed more excellence from the get go. After all, takes are not rehearsals; although, recording rehearsals can give a great take - sometimes. Many great albums were imperfect recordings of live events which were sometimes sweetened or studio tracked later.

As a former producer/director, I’ll add that less takes allow you to spend more time in areas that you may need or run into, unexpectedly. YMMV.

Of course this means all things being equal and it doesn’t fit everyone’s situation or desire. Engineers, producers, concepts, and facilities all play a part. It is, however, something to strive for should one choose. Think of it this way . . . if perfection was the mark upon whether or not to perform on stage a lot of music might never be seen or heard. The same goes for recordings, including great ones.

FSB

Here’s some fun to try. I took an afternoon to listen to some early recordings from the 60s and not only did I hone in on the simplicity, but I paid attention to flubs I hadn’t noticed before. There were many and some of these became million sellers as they were. Likely one takes. You might try a listen with your old recordings. :D

A lot of times, what I've actually played on a recording is a lot or even a little different than what I wind up eventually playing live. Often, things evolve when you keep playing something. You come up with new ideas, or something just improvised. I guess that's what happens when you acquire more experience as a musician.

I hear ya, Paul. That’s a pretty common practice for a variety of reasons. I’m going out on a limb by saying this is more likely to happen with instrumentals than with vocals for obvious reasons. Not always, just in general. We all know lyrics also fall into this category.

What do 1960, ‘64, ‘68, ‘77, ‘86, and 2000 have in common? All different versions of Walk Don’t Run played and recorded by the Ventures. ‘77 (Disco), ‘86 (Heavy Metal sort of), 2000 included.a sax. One can only guess how many different arrangements showed up on stage. We know different guitars came into play as well.

Sandy Nelson Let There Be Drums (1961) and Let There Be Drums ‘66 (1965) were different versions as well. Both successful.

We’re talking about the same primary artists and/or band. Maybe only one musician changed their part, and often it might be just the bass and drums (prevalent in free form Latino) aside from overal tempo and genre which could be a collective contribution.

Before and after re-releases with a different flavor have come and gone, but The Ventures have set the bar IMHO in that arena.

Rawk on, bro’ and knock ‘em off their dancin’ feet. 8)

It's very cool if you're into horses and riding. This is the clinic schedule for today:

That Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo schedule looks to be really interesting. Marky. Thanks! The ‘Desert Dangers For Horses’ in 2 parts grabbed my eye. That must be a lot of dangers and brings a question. If that’s the dangers for a big horse what would it be for little ol’ me? My Mom was an Alberta/Montana cowgirl (my father was scared of horses), and her clinic would be been ‘Grizzly dangers for horses’. I rode in the ocean, and I guess my clinic would have been ‘How to stomp on jelly fish’.
