A lighter axe is always a bonus IMHO (all things considered with the tone). What’s the weight difference with your Precision and your violin bass, Paul? Have you ever have had more or similar humidity concerns with the violin?

TIA

I don't know the exact specs with the weight on each bass, but I'd say there's a couple of pounds difference. One's a short scale full hollow body, and the other is a solid hunk of wood, which isn't the heaviest bass I've ever held, but you know you are carrying it. That part doesn't bother me, though. I have good straps that balance that out. The thing that I'm noticing the differences are is the necks. I haven't noticed any effects with any humidity, or dryness with it lately. I had to do some slight tweaking on the neck, because of some buzzing on the 1st fret again, but it seems to have settled down.

Thanks, Paul. Yeah, I can relate to the frets. Although, your situation may not have related to humidity, sometimes, as you well know, it can be a pretty good indicator of humidity change (likely before some other issues).

My Amn Dlx Strat was a surprise when, after a few years, I felt some problems with my fret hand . I discovered that I had what appeared to be small paper cuts causing soreness. I certainly didn’t know what caused it. I soon discovered how sharp the end of the frets were as the neck shrank width wise ever so little. I have lived in many places under many conditions and I’ve been fortunate to never run across such shrinkage. This fretboard is maple and the others were rosewood. I don’t know if that can differ in this case and so I just write it off to being pretty dry in the house, etc. I do suspect choice of wood maple or rosewood will be different with humidity however. Maybe oiling or not having to will also have an influence.

That shrinking was a curse and a blessing in disguise. The blessing was that I got the frets professionally filed and smoothed out to where it now plays like butter. The curse is that my acoustic came from the factory with that guitar smoothly dressed just as well, and the acoustic/electric is almost half the cost of the Amn Dlx! Go figure. The Strat’s original fretwork was a disappointment, minor as it was. On the flip side, I have to be more attentitive to the acoustic’s humidity since I can’t have the luxury of a controlled environment. Not keeping it on a stand is a little inconvenient af times.

The Strat does pretty well now, and setup has it stay in tune longer than I would have expected. Aside from the initial fretwork, it’s a keeper. It doesn’t live in a case, and yet I have concerns should I ever get a hollow body Gretsch I and my better half have GAS for.

For those who need fretwork like this, do yourself a favour. It can be done if you are confidently handy or for very little cost by a luthier or experienced tech. Your hands will thank you and it will make your playing much more enjoyable. IMHO

Life is good. :D

I had issues with sharp fret ends because of the wood drying out over the winter, or whatever the cause was, and got a sandpaper file that was designed to deal with that, and some blue painters tap, then took care of it myself. I used this stuff that was in the house to put on some wood tables in the kitchen: Image

That seems to do the trick to clean up any scuffs from sanding and perks up the fretboard. It's supposed to rehydrate the wood, so I figured it couldn't hurt to keep it from drying out again. I let it sit overnight and buffed out the neck the next day, since the stuff is on the greasy feeling side, until it settles in a bit. It wasn't probably intended for use on guitars, but it was what I had on hand, and figured wood is wood.

I don’t think there are any rules for this - just common practices and experiences, and yours is another to add to the list, Paul. Here’s hoping it works for ya. Beats sore hands.

I recorded a vocal track (not me singing) and I think it sounds pretty good. I'm going to add electric and acoustic guitar tracks and a drum track. I think it's unusual to start with the vocal but it seemed like the thing to do at the time. :)

True that the music track, or at least the percussion track, is most often (with exceptions) laid down before recording the vocalist.

You might find this of interest:

But, I’ll have fun with that because a vocal was the very first recording (others followed much later with instruments):

And as if that wasn’t enough . . . the next tecording was also the voice, but after the coronet was laid down. A guitar track would not make it before or after the voice at this time:

Just goes to show ya that there are choices.
Hope you feel better, Marky.

Jamming a bit on the violin bass and listening to some mid 60's music. For some reason, I feel compelled to do that when I spend a lot of time with that bass. :P

Going for a walk, then do some shopping, and maybe get some rehearsing time in. There is a show coming up, after all.

Thanks so much, FSB. I'm doing better today and I appreciate the article, "When should I record the vocals?" and the videos. It's quite a learning process but I'm lovin' every minute of it. 8)

I waiting to see if the rain will slow or stop enough to go for a walk, then maybe get some rehearsal time in.

It's pouring rain, so it doesn't look like we'll be going out for a walk, so I'll have to work out in the house, and I'm hoping to put in a rehearsal. I had a pretty good one, yesterday. I need to go get some 9 volt batteries, since the one in my tuner crapped out, and I don't have any. They're good to have on hand, to begin with.

Well . . . with over a month of this continent wide flu I and my better half are both on some pretty heavy duty antibiotics.

My Hendrixs skills are not the best, but if I slop some s’ghetti sauce on my shirt, wrap one of my colourful ties (which I seldom wear anymore) around my head, grab the Strat, crank the amp, and play in front of my ‘66 Premiers like Mitch Mitchell had, maybe I too can enjoy the Experience.

Then again my white (I prefer to call it silver) hair is a dead giveaway. Hey! I got it. Maybe I can pass as Keef doing Jimi. He’s got the same look. Wrapped head and all. Notice how I got the word head in again? :P
Peace!
