That sounds like a really
good idea. Ice cream is one of life’s great pleasures. IMHO.

Chocolate filled cookies are another one. Make that two because that’s how many I just finished off. :P

Thumbs up on external drives of any kind. I keep hard copies of anything I want saved (data and the inclusion of photos and music to be brief). I’ve even used left over floppies on a cheap portable drive occassionly so it doesn’t end up on my PC, add to my hard drive storage, or waste a CD/DVD. I’ll often do that for a quick temporary need without burying the medium in a folder somewhere. Thumb drives work too of course, although there have been debates over both the longevity and data loss of thumb drives over time and generations.

I don't like to store anything on cloud for privacy reasons even though, like FSB said, real privacy is a thing of the past. I use a Seagate 2tb external hd to back up everything on my laptop. First, I used Reflect software to place a complete mirror image of everything on my computer, including the OS, onto the hd. Then I made a bootable cd so I could startup the computer and use Reflect to restore everything exactly as it was. This is good in the event of a total crash or virus destroying my ability to access my precious data. Now I just make regular backups, to the same external hd, of any folders or files that I have added or changed. I feel pretty comfortable with this method of protecting my goodies.

Great backup plan, Marky.

I limit my computer banking to the bank. Inconvenient? Somewhat, but no more than prior to the common day 90s PCs and computer banking which came later. If it ain’t in the file folders it’s one step less to be concerned about. :P
FSB

After my multiple turn downs of the opportunity to bank online, a bank manager did his best to change my habit. After informing him that my home encryption exceeded his bank’s, he went to work the next day only to be presented with a surprise. Hackers hit the same bank at corporate headquarters. Besides, my banks are just down the street within walking distance. :P

YMMV

Another clever idea the twisted people have come up with. Convince people to continuously update to the latest version of untested software and that not doing so is stupid. That way, we get the public to do all our beta testing for us. Best case scenario, get people to adjust their settings so that updates are done automatically. That way we get the maximum number of lemmings falling off the cliff and our beta testing is expedited.

I NEVER allow any device to update automatically. I always wait several months or more after a major update (version change) so they can can get the first few fixes done. My own best case scenario is if I can get 2 or 3 months notice of an upcoming major new version release. That’s when you know all the kinks have been ironed out of the current version. Update now and try everything to make sure there are no conflicts with existing apps and then wait and enjoy the show while the masses pull their hair out after updating.

My biggest reason for wanting several months notice rather than a couple weeks is because if there ARE any conflicts, you can safely go get help without the teenager at the Apple Store or Staples or whatever telling you that your biggest problem is that you need to update because Lord knows, THAT’S gonna solve everything.
No, I want things solved now so I have a stable system so I can afford to wait after a new release.

Quoting Vincent Price, “if I may put forth a slice of my own philosophy I feel that,” one of the reasons people are easily convinced to be lemmings and turn on automatic updates is so they can feel like they’re in the cool crowd, learning the new interface, which doesn’t really help anybody be more productive but it’s fun learning what all the new problems are and everybody else is doing it and it makes us feel smarter than everybody because we know all the cool new stuff.

OK, son. You’re right. I’m just an old man. I don’t know anything.

Waiting for the temperature to go up a bit before I go out for a walk. It's around 24 degrees right now, which I know is balmy for Canada, but I'm not ready to deal with Arctic conditions yet. It's still technically Fall. :P

 I'm the same way. I don't allow any apps or programs to auto-update and I've been happy that I don't more than once. :)

Yah, back when I was like most people and insisted on keeping everything right up to date, like up to the minute I had sooo many problems as a direct result of updating. Windows related problems as well as handheld devices. Nowadays I stay somewhere between 8 months to a year behind the times and I am a happy camper. I can't believe I never thought of it sooner. I wish I had.
I no longer have computer problems like I used to. Apple seems to have a good handle on their version of Unix/Linux for computers but they still haven't got the IOS thing stabilized yet. I only wait 2 months or so for my Mac but I wait at least 6 or 7 months for my iPhone. Sometimes longer if I hear ugly things.

Boy, do I agree with you Matt about the beta/update scenario. It’s good and then again not so good to have software tied to the Internet. Good in that one can find and get a plethora of goodies (free and paid for) that might go unseen otherwise, add features, and, hopefully, correct compatibility problems to be brief. Unfortunately, it’s the chicken and egg swap.

Sometimes OSs, programs, and supporting software (such as Flash, Silverlight, security support, and more) are no longer able to play nice on their own with software or browser update. At other times the browser is by itself the cause for this pain. Sometimes, the browser and their features are by the same company that owns the OS. Can you say Microsoft or, to a lesser extent, Apple? Can you think Google? Now we have update heavy apps and sharing of our data in place of old style software. All in all a marriage meant for new installations. Out with the old and in with the new. It used to be that the software outlasted much of the hardware. This reminds me of the car companies and the energy companies. While inventions were available to increase gas mileage, rather than destroying those entrepreneurs’ devices, it is reported that fuel had additives that altered the performance not only in a good way, but also in a calculated controlling way. Electrics are in a camp of their own, most of which is yet to be seen.

Yes, Tiny Tim . . . the lemmings, soon to be guineau pigs, are lined up for tomorrow’s aches and pains once again. Will they get it right this time around? I doubt it. I’m certainly in favour of improvements for the consumer, but not with planned obsolescence, unfortunately, even if it does change with hurrahs and confetti, you can bet it will be scrapped or sold with less for more. Maybe, some smart developer will come out with home style dedicated computers far from the maddening crowd as industry uses. I think we are not too far away from having it all on dedicated servers online. MS Office sets an example of the change from being on a CD loaded and reloaded on your hard drive. Okay, that’s my rant for today. That’s nothing. Wait’ll you upgrade your fridge.

History shows that in aeronautics, space craft, and other things . . . the KISS principle has longevity simply because it works as an alternative when desirable. YMMV. :P

Aw, shoot! Sorry, Marky. I meant to say great backup plan, Marky. It’s not as convenient reading and typing on the phone.

It’s corrected now.

Going to go for a walk, then decide what else I'm going to do when I get back. Maybe work on some music, or at least put in some bass time.

I’m going to flip a coin to see what dastardly project I want to tackle today in my downsizing and rearranging of the basement. But, first I’ll put some tunes on. :D

Finished breakfast and going through the usual internet rounds. I'll go for a walk in a little while and who knows what else?

I don't eat Jello all the time. I may get some ice cream as I watch TNF.

Late this afternoon, I put up the outside Christmas lights on the house. I feel better getting those up.
