Right now? (Monday, 12/21 @ 11:55am)

Well, I'm off for Christmas break for two weeks, since schools are closed (I'm a school bus driver), so I have lots of free time now. So.... right now I am doodling around on my old Ibanez mandolin that I've had for years. These things are really cool but very tiny compared to playing bass or guitar!

Those are pretty fun to mess around with. I had a friend once, who owned one that he let me borrow for awhile, and I even wrote a song idea on it and recorded it to a 4-track I had. I still had the tape when I moved to Rhode Island 13 years ago, but it disappeared soon afterwards. I have no clue what happened to it. I suppose it doesn't matter, since it's not like I couldn't do that again.

Yeah, mandolins are a lot of fun. They add a little extra flavor to an acoustic tune.

For those who have never goofed around with a mandolin, it's cool... They are a little different at first. They are tuned identical to a violin/fiddle (exactly identical - same key, same pitch, just double stringed), G - D - A - E

D chord
Middle finger = G string, 2nd fret
D string = open
A string = open
Ring finger = E string, 2nd fret

G chord
G string = open
D string = open
Index finger = A string, 2nd fret
Middle finger = E string, 3rd fret

C chord (identical to G chord, just shifted down to the next pair of strings)
G string = open
Index finger = D string, 2nd fret
Middle finger = A string, 3rd fret
E string = open

Next time you are in Guitar Center or Sam Ash or wherever, grab a mandolin and try it out! :)

I remembered how it was tuned by basically the same as a bass, but reversed. The funny thing was I don't know why my friend ever bought it in the first place. I never seen him actually do anything with it. Probably thought it would be a cool thing to have, I guess. :P

Cool. 8) By the way, how do you rotate your basses when you play? You play one one day, or all of them in one day?

I just get into playing one for three or four days, then change out. I like playing them like that, it gives me a bit more time to reset the amp for each one that way. Try it out on all the settings.

Opening presents . . . early.

Then it's back to the company laptop.

Well, at least you don't have to go into an office, do you?

That sounds like a good plan. I just have a tendency to play my Schecter, although I do have the Squier in the office, but most of the time it's not plugged in. The other basses need repair, so they are kind of sidelined right now. I guess if they all were working, I might switch it around a bit, maybe for different songs. At least I can say I did use them in the past and on recordings.

No . . . but they asked me to. I'm getting the 30th off so I can work the New Year's eve paid company holiday. That's not so bad and I have no plans to be awake at midnight anyway.
