Just wondering what people's pets do when you start playing. I have two cats that handle it quite differently. The fat one, Jinx likes to lay on the head of my amp. He loves the warmth provided by the tubes. This is much to my disliking since I'm worried about cat hair getting into the vents and messing it up. The other cat, Red Wing sees me reach for the guitar and he is out of there. Even unplugged. Must hate my playing or is conditioned to run to the hills!!!! :P

So what do you pets do?

My little dog (dachshund/terrier mix) is my number-one groupie and a major Stratocaster fan. She's doesn't really come around much when I'm playing my Jazzmaster or an acoustic, but she almost always comes in the room when I'm playing my Strat. If I sit on the couch in my music room, she sometimes tries to sit in my lap and lick the guitar while I'm playing. Fortunately, I also have a stool I can sit on when she becomes too obtrusive.

Hahaha.. Love the topic.

I have a cat named Zappa.

It just depends. If I'm playing my acoustic, she loves it. She'll just lay down beside me and crash. As soon as I even go near an amp, she's out the door.

By the way, her favorite place to sleep is inside a kick drum.

I annoy my cat. Everything annoys my cat. Everything but eating, sleeping and pooping. I annoy my wife also......which has nothing to do with playing the guitar.

I have an orange cat that likes to sneak up and lick the strings while I'm playing. He comes up behind me and around my right side while I'm sitting and just starts licking strings. The first time he did it I didn't even realize he was there until I looked down because all the guitars sustain was gone. He was going to town. I have to shut him out of the room when I play or he keeps doing it over and over. I guess it feels good on his tongue or something because he only does it when I'm playing.

My orange cat likes to bite strings. Whenever I leave my bass on the floor, for some reason I tend to get distracted when restringing by bass, he bites the E string. It isn't just a nibble, he bites and pulls it. You just hear the slap of the string back on to the neck and the the proonnggggg of the E. He only does it once per string change though.

Licking the strings is weirder I think.

My two dogs (Jack Russell's) will look right into the amps and turn their heads different ways. Kind of following the tones... If they like the rhythm they will Howl and sing :D

My dog lays close by me while I play. My cats watch me or just sleep, they don't care.

I've got a foxhound that has a problem with my acoustic guitar.

He likes to bark at it because it will resonate with his bark..when I'm playing it, he has a quizzical look on his face and randomly barks at me...when I set it in a stand, he comes up and barks in the sound hole, then starts looking for whatever lives in there that made the sound back at him....He doesn't seem to care about the electrics.

He also lets me know when he thinks I should be playing with him instead of the guitar...

My cat bites and licks the strings too. I guess she;s not as weird as i thought.

She gets really excited if she makes a sound. When she was little she would jump right on the neck while I was playing, try stand on it and reach down to bite. She is weird in that she doesn't run with loud music.

We had a full set up in the basement, when I still had room mates, drums, 2 guitar amps, bass amp. I thought she would hide upstairs, but we were all jamming, loud, and she came right down, and climbed on the bass head. i actually had to lock her out, i was worried about her hearing, but she still has super sharp cat ears. hates when i do ZZ Top style pinch harmonics though.

She does jump from loud noises sometimes, but I live across from the fairgrounds for the bug summer fair, she sits in the patio door and watches the fireworks when they have them, but if I open the door the noise scares her, to me its so loud anyway, i don't get how she can tell the difference.

Hello MrJinx,

This my African Grey Parrot, named Woody.

His favorite album is Eat A Peach by The Allman Brothers
Who knows maybe he toured with them.
We've had him for abot 15 years, his true age is unknown.
He is a good time especially at sunrise.

Cheers.

I have a couple of lizards that look at me when I'm playing. My dogs (Australian Shepard and Pembroke Welsh Corgi) were scared of my amp at first and ran around barking at it, especially when I'd make some sudden weird guitar noise or feedback. They've finally gotten used to it and now they mostly don't care.
My corgi sits under my legs when I try to play drums. It must hurt his ears, considering how big they are.
