I don't think "Jerusalem" can be taken literally, since Blake was (as noted) a mystic of the spiritualist order and also barking mad.

But can you not feel a stirring your blood when they sing, "Bring me my bow of purest gold, bring me my arrows of desire?" Hell, I'm a freakin' American and it gets to me!

In my ears, "Jerusalem" is a declaration of an artist to the world...

"I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land."

I think in Blake's poem, Jerusalem is a state of mind. Now, I don't know enough history to know if Zionists took it as an anthem, but, sort of like Humpty Dumpty, all that matters to me is what it means when I hear it.
