Well here is a tip for practicing that can benefit begginer to pro. After doing your usual warm ups.I take all the parts of songs or solos, fast riffs, licks that are difficult and just conentrate on these for an hour.I have seen so many people show me a sticking point and play the whole part they can play leading up to the sticking point and then hit the clam, and when they try it again do the same thing, which is a waste of time.Just trim the fat and play the part that is giving you trouble over and over, and take 7or 8 of these and you have a practice that yoyr really getting something out if.I always tell people the things your eally good at you dont really need but to run through them once a day.Does anyone else have some ineresting practice regimes.

Hi Straycat113: I'd add to that, play the difficult part very, very slowly. Once you can do that, speed it up a little. Then a little more. With a metronome is ideal. It's the quickest route to the end point.

How many of us have wasted hours trying and failing to play a tricky passage at full speed? All we're doing is reinforcing our knowledge of how not to play the part.

If you can't play it slow you can't play if fast. But most of us go through a lifetime knowing that - and yet not acting upon it.

Cheers - C

Once I'm able to play a song at full speed, I like to play with the song because it helps me with keeping a steady tempo and seeing how everything fits together.

Great advice -- the only way you'll get better as a player is if you practice the things you DON'T do well. It can be frustrating, but you'll see the payoff in the end!

As another poster mentioned, working with a metronome is imprtant, too. When working on a scale/solo/exercise, start out slowly until you can play the part without mistakes, and then gradually speed up.

My fourth music teacher taught us that when I was fifteen. It really does work and maximizes your practice time. Great advice.
