Thanks again. I'm glad you enjoyed that picture.

The cool guitar pics here on the Fender Forum are what interested me in digital photography. I also learned, after taking a bunch of really bad indoor photos, to take my camera and Fenders outside and take advantage of the desert sunlight. It's difficult to take a bad picture on a clear, sunny day in the desert.

Yes, as a person who's both a photographer and an avid guitar nut, I'd like to see the picture as well.

Sure, Ceri. By the way, I'm a big fan of your pics of historic parts of London.

If you don't mind a bit of a critique on the picture....

The lighting and color there are pretty nice, but personally I would have cleared the stuff off that ledge in the background then moved the guitars over a foot or two to the right so that the cactus wasn't directly behind the neck/headstock of the guitar on the left. This also would have gotten rid of that 4x4 and the over hang of the roof there...aka you need to minimize all the distractions/clutter in the shot. When you are taking shots like this, ask yourself what the picture is supposed to be about. Is it about those planters on the wall? Is it about the cactus? Is it about the sky? Or is it simply about the guitars? Once you decide what the shot is about, then minimize and eliminate everything that doesn't add to the main subject then focus in tight on the subject itself.

I also would have shot (or cropped) this vertically (portrait) instead of horizontally (landscape). Since the top of the wall is for all intensive purposes your horizon line, I think I might have tried moving the guitars forward a bit too...this would have made the wall a little "taller" in the background and would have put your horizon line in the upper third of the shot (rule of thirds).

Not trying to be mean, rude or insulting here...it's an ok picture but if you had of put a little more thought and effort in to it, it could have been truly exceptional :D.

Just my $.02 worth...please take it for what it is and how it was intended.

Peace,
Jim

Thanks John. I found some fun locations - but you definitely have the advantage when it comes to light and color! Cool photo.

And of course, nice guitars!

Thanks, Jim! Any and all criticism is welcomed. I'm a newbie at digital photography and I appreciate all your thoughts and tips.

That pic was just a quickie taken soon after I bought the $999 VG. I was having a hard time putting it down and I gave very little thought to the background. The two Strats were the only focus and I was trying to get a few fast shots with the late afternoon sun providing the light.

Reducing background clutter and using my camera's portrait setting are excellent ideas. I'll try them when I take my Strats outside again... and I think I _will_ put some sunscreen on the Oly White the next time.
