Forget about about the source of "tone."

I've yet to find another person who's ever chewed a piece of gum long enough that it "broke down" in their mouth.

Have you ever done that?

The first time it happened to me, while walking home from school, it came as quite a surprise. I had started chewing the gum around noon (after lunching), and about 3 hours later, it broke down into a hard-to-describe-but-no-longer-like-a-piece-of-chewed-gum mass that I spit (more like sprayed) out onto the street.

I've only replicated this experiment twice more my whole life.

Anyone else?

Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight?
If your mother says don't chew it
Do you swallow it in spite?
Can you catch it on your tonsils,
Can you heave it left and right?
Does your chewing gum lose its flavor
On the bedpost overnight?

You don't hear much about this thing.

When it happens, it's usually quite unexpected.

I did mention it to a guy at work, after submitting the post, and he said it happened to him too!

I've had it happen once...but I just thought the gum was defective or old. I still do not chew Bubbalicious to this day. RK

I used to have this happen to me all the time at an old job I had. I always knew it was time for lunch when my gum broke down in my mouth.

I have not done that before.
Before it gets to the point of no return just stick it to the back of the headstock and change the tone by adding mass!!!!!

Aaarrrggghh! I said no "tone" discussions!

Usually, when I've mentioned this "chewing gum breaking down" phenomenon before, I got disbelieving stares.

Try it, experience it for yourself.

If I get to make up the rules, I will say that gum versus gum info is fine.

I know that price doesn't contribute to the chewing time to breakdown.
Cheap gum (eg, baseball card gum) can last a LONG time, while pricier gums can breakdown quickly.
