Ah but thats the point. As you know. As a player after a while you reach a level and dont expand much from that point on. You do however improve control over the tool and improve endlessly over time on the small things of your playing. Speed of bend for instance is a very individual yet expressive aspect that changes over time and reveals clues to your intent. Remember Chuck chewing out Keith over a bend that he just couldnt get right.

That came from playing incorrectly, over and over again, for many years. That was an initial bend up which can be missed in the listening. Unlike Beck, Richards, like Berry, is only note perfect in the studio. In live performance, Berry NEVER played the technically perfect and creative solos he recorded. I saw him at the Filmore East in Manhattan about 30 odd years ago. Likewise, I've watched Richards in live performance. It just doesn't come down the pike in like fashion, live.

What ever Leo intended can be found in 'The Stratocaster Chronicles.' Beyond that, is where no one had gone before  Dale, Marvin, Hendrix, Van Halen, Beck, 8)

I am not too proud to look a word up in the dictionary!

Per-si-flage = " Light, jesting or teasing talk or writing; banter...
to banter".

It's right above "Persimmon" (the tropical fruit bearing tree)... and right below "Persian Lamb" (makes a nice rug)...

And right now I think I'll sit on one, eat the other and contemplate how little I really know of the complexities of the heavenly extrusion of tones from my Super Reverb Amp and how little attention I paid in my "Word Power class"...

Well there you go! And I'd always thought it was the name of one of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table.

"The Tale of Brave Sir Persiflage"...

'Course, since every one of us is sitting at a computer it is the work of a split second to look up a word we don't know.

Our language is what makes us human...

Now if this was the '70s we'd sit right down and turn that into a Prog Rock concept album, with Rick Wakeman on keyboards.

Thank goodness it isn't the '70s!

"airy persiflage" mates....W.S.Gilbert & Sir Arthur Sullivan..."The Mikado"...words and music of a different age.

I think we all will have to agree that mr. Gilmour isn't sounding the same on his guitars!
He always sound like Gilmour but there is a notible difference between his guitars. The black black and red strats, for obvious reasons, doesn't sound the same at all!
So my point is that though this is excellent reading, it's not the intent, not the gear, not the phrasing or backing band. It's the unity of it all.
And we all knew that before we read the entire thread, didn't we?

Ha! Well I certainly didn't spot that reference.

As Londoners we tend to presume G&S are our personal possession. But the best production I ever saw was a pro-am show of The Yoemen of the Guard somewhere on Cape Cod, early 1970s. I can't imagine why Gilbert & Sullivan would appeal to Americans - but they definitely did an excellent job with it. Every syllable glass clear and very involving acting. Memorable.

Cheers - C

I don't imagine that G&S appeals to Americans any more than Sigmund Romburg does. :D But you have to know who he is to catch a Firesign Theater joke, from the "100 Unclaimed Melodies" bit they used to do live:

(bad, semi-operatic singing)

"Yes, it's the Lilting "Revenge Duet" from The Floating Prince by Stein."

You know, I am finding this thread fairly interesting. It seems that even in guitar playing, there is hinayana and mahayana... a little vehicle and a Great Vehicle.

As for the idea that this entire philosophy can be knocked into a cocked hat by stating something obvious like, "well, you can't sound like this record without a phase shifter," (or whatever), I submit that you miss the point. I beg your indulgence as I repeat an ancient story... I heard it about Chet Atkins, performing live in Nashville. He supposedly put his Country Gent on a stand and took a break, and a fan stopped him to say how great his guitar sounded. Chet supposedly pointed to it on the stage, and remarked:

"Yeah? How does it sound now?"

--------------

Not too much different than a dazzling "word of Zen" my wife spoke this weekend, while in the company of some folks who have faith in a very simple religion. We were sitting around eating strawberry shortcake with them, when two elderly sisters in the group had a brief exchange to the effect that they should really enjoy moments like this one, because they had so little time left. To which one of the younger women said with a blissed-out smile that "no worry.... one day, we will have the time we need," referring to her belief that they would all be together in Heaven, presumably around this very kitchen table, for eternity.

My wife scooped up a big spoon of shortcake and said, without a trace of irony, "I have all the time I need right now."
