Ive been doing taekwondo for a while now and currently hold a black belt in it. But i play guitar too and i love it and have come to the position that i want to become a great guitar player but i feel i cant do that if im doing martial arts and guitar. If you were in my shoes would you give up martial arts for a while to study music and guitar. P.S. i never lose my rank as black belt so i can come back ten years later and it would be like i never left.

If you learn to play like Pete Townsend then I think it would qualify for both guitar playing and TaeKwonDo...............you know, kill tow birds with one stone.

When I was in middle school I made baseball and guitar work.

I was a very good athlete when I was younger. Now that I am older, 49, I wish I had given music more time when I was younger. I had fun in sports but music is much more satisfying. I say devote your time to music and see how that makes you feel. If you really miss martial arts, you can always return to it. But for me playing guitar and singing are much more rewarding.

So what do you think its like when you grow up and have a 40 hour week job? It does not mean you have to give up Guitar. You can always find time to do the things you love and the ones you have to do. Guitars are not my only thing for me I am also into firearms to. Sure there are times when work limits them but I would not give either up.

Follow what your inside voice is telling you. If you truely want to pursue the guitar, do it. However, I do recommend to keep practicing on your Taekwondo on your own. And like you said you never lose your "rank". Again, follow your instincts. RK

GOOD FOR YOU! Truly focused people with a single goal-with-intent-to-master are positively amazing to this Olympic Gold Medal round dilettante.

Personal philosophy on having many, varied interests and skill levels (mostly low):

"Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly."

And personal interpretation:

"Anything TRULY worth doing is worth doing TRULY poorly.

('Write fiction, nonfiction (maybe 20 books in progress), play guitar, bass (more than ten different types of music from classical through surf), church band, teach religious education, study history, chemistry, astronomy, physics, anthropology, a bit of percussion, scale model, draw, paint, woodwork, cycling, photography, hiking, a bit of sailing....)

GOOD FOR YOU having only two chioces of, "What do I want to excel in?"
