I had this idea today and I was wondering if anyone else has such a project going. I started a notebook today to keep track of my guitar odyssey. The events that led to my first guitar, the lessons since...etc. It will be fun to look back at someday when I mistake my cane for a guitar as an old man :D

Hello Fenderseeker09,

I think a journal is fantastic idea,
many a moon ago in the mid 70's I kept
a journal for my cycling while preparing for my
first metric century. I kept it up for about four months
but lacked the discipline to document the daily training and
eventually lost interest in the bookkeeping end of things. If I were
able to look it over today, I'm sure it would jog some fond memories.

At least give it a start.

Cheers.

Probably a good idea if you're into it. I've been keeping a fishing journal for 30 years. Most people probably don't have the "stick-to-it-iveness" to do it though.

Hmm. Count this picker in.

January 2007, 'began a spreadsheet of what was played through what amp and ultra-brief comments. Interesting, 2 1/4 years into it. One example of data therein; 'play guitar a little over 1 1/2 times per day, on average.

Also, 'keep a running "Guitars and amps" section in life-journal, as well as running entries in each year, what date what was played / shopped for / gigs / acquired or divested.

Personally, 'find this life / Heaven-granted gift, of great interest. And a PC with Word and Excel makes it super-easy.

And who said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." ?????

A don't keep a journal per se, but I do maintain a log recording my daily practice routine. I'll mark down what songs/exercises I'm working on, how much time I spend on them, and how many beats-per-minute I'm playing them at. I find it a very useful tool for measuring my progress, kind of like a workout log for the gym...

This is weird because I started the same thing this week also.I used to keep one years ago and there great .Well I have about 800 backissues of guitar mags in the basement and always grab one when I go into the bathroom.I grabbed an old guitar world with Randy Rhoads on the cover and it was a piece on when he use to teach ,and it showed how he kept a note book of his regimens. So as I have been teaching my son I wrote out the keys of c and g .This is how I do it top of page key -c then 1 to 7 chords then under that mode 1=ionnian 2==dorian and so on .Then under that formula 1major 135-2minor-1flat35and so on then under that arpeggio breakdown. Then under that c major harmonized in 7ths and repeat every thing else then finish with relative minor Am.So after 2 pages you have 4 keys with c and am on 1 and g and em on the other and a lot of info and this is a great way to learn the modes, chord formulas, arpeggios ,scales and it does not have too look like rocket science check it out.Hope it is useful to some of you

Be careful guys. You're coming mighty close to regimenting the fun right out of it.

It's not about schedules, tasks and making learning a chore...I like to see my progress. Sure it is slow but even the best started somewhere I guess  I think it will be cool when I can look and see when I could only play three chords compared to my first riff, song or solo :D

Yeah cool idea, what about a digital camcorder, if they'd been around all those years ago I could look back and figure out my parents comments of "call that music"& "what the ....... are you doing to that cat, hold on we don't have a cat"& "turn that ....... thing down" or "I though you played guitar why do I hear drums, thats not drums mom thats the neighbours Ha Ha Ha
