Can you all sing? Lots more fun if you can do harmonies.

No Matter What - Badfinger
Basket Case - Green Day
Train In Vain - The Clash
Get Rhythm - Johnny Cash (the Little Richard version is a hot template)

You can play any basic rock song as a trio.

That all depends on what your definition of a three-piece is - one guitar, one bass, and a drummer, (Green Day) or two guitars and a bass (early Johnny Cash), or two guitars and a drummer (my current lineup)?

For a standard 3 piece, I would consider songs by, The Who, ZZ Top, Police and there must be dozens of others, like Cream, Hendrix etc etc.
The longer you think about it, the bigger the list gets. Good luck.

The great thing about Rhumba's list is -- you only need one singer! But if you do have two or more, you can get into some of the more vocal groups (Tom Petty, Beach Boys, Beatles, etc.) and come out sounding good with the right arrangements.

If all three sing, at least to a point, you can probably do almost anything unless the sound is totally dependent on an instrument you don't have. "Whiter Shade of Pale" without a keyboard player? Pretty hard to image but even there, I've heard groups do a credible version with just guitars, bass and drums.

You can play pretty much anything you want with a three piece. Drums, bass guitar and vocals - what else do you need?

Personally, I hate playing with other guitar players. I do much better making original arrangements of songs (if needed) that sound fine on their own, without having to deal with some other guitar player with an ego problem and having to "work out parts" with them.

If you're fine with that, but are just concerned with vocals - there are lots of instrumentals you can jam on, or styles you can write music in without needing a singer. As long as you have a good bass player that's not some one-note wonder, that plays bass only because he's not good enough to play chords and solos.

Thanks.........we should be ok. The three of us can sing (somewhat) so we can mix it up. May have to throw in a few country tunes but what's the worst that can happen?

I just don't want to get caught up in the 10min solo thing on ever song. That can be a drag even for someone who is a "lead guitar junkie".

If nobody sang, you could do it. If all of you sing, even somewhat, you're fine. The 10 min solos are cool, but get old fast, even to other musicians there.

Always leave them wanting a little more. Hit them hard on the last one so they think "Damn, these guys are good! I want to hear them play more. Where can I see them again?"

You don't want "Dear lord, another loooooooong solo? When is this gonna end?"

I do (and have done) many 3-piece gigs. You don't need to limit yourself to covering only 3 piece bands/artists.

Think and be creative, there are a lot of tunes that could be done with guitar, bass & drums.

Miami Mike took the words right outa my mouth. I'm in a Three peice with a singer (making four), but when I sing, it's atraditional 3 peice. One of our best tunes is Godzilla and Blue Oyster Cult is a Huge Band.

The trick is not to nail yourself down to one guitar part, but rather listen to the overal melody or riff, and put the parts together into one guitar part. In fact, get "ZZ Top live from Texas" DVD and see how Billy Gibbons blends all the over dubbed parts into one guitar part (ignore the ocassional piped in part, they're pretty obvious.
