Thanks for the suggestions everyone, they really helped! :)

Here's the set list,

Hide Away (SRV style)
Purple Haze
Crossroads
Texas Flood
Sunshine of Your Love
Free Ride

That should end up being around 30 minutes, and we can jam if need be. You know, this is the first time I've ever been able to play an entire set of songs I really like. :D We're still trying to figure out a name, and judging by the set list I think we should be called The Stevie Clapdrix Experience. Not.

Nice choices -- looks like it was meant to be, not like you asked an internet forum at the last minute! I was going to suggest Jean Genie, because you can just keep playing the vamp forever while you introduce all the band members and crack a few jokes at their expense.. periodically taking a break to mumble "Jus' lemme play a li'l guitar, here.." but I think your selection fits the bill perfectly. Break a leg!

Just about any '50s rock should be easy to learn; Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly. Most songs of that genre are built around three chords, and fun to play if you let loose. Good luck!

Ditto on this and those that followed. There must be 40 gazillion blues songs based on a I IV V progression, for which you only need know melody and lyrics. You can also hope that enough booze is being ingested to make the music irrelevant. :P

Wow!!! Never played together before: three days to put together a 30 minute set - including learning the numbers!

Streuth: good luck!

Reminds me of a recurrent nightmare I have - this is really true. I dream I have to play the Beethoven Violin Concerto in a concert hall at very short notice. I know that piece well, but not well enough to play it. So in the dream I am desperately studying the score and trying to memorise all the sections, the cadenzas, yadda yadda.

In this dream it is only at the moment when I walk out onto the stage and face the audience that I realise it doesn't matter whether I've learnt the Beethoven Violin Concerto thoroughly enough or not - I can't actually play the violin!

That's the moment I wake up in a sweat...

Hope this is calming your nerves, texasguitarslinger...?

Cheers - C

And on top of all that, my singer just quit and I have to find someone else today! Is this how bands usually work?

I have dreams like that too. I get on stage and there's about two or three thousand people out there staring at me impatiently, I look around the stage and realize someone took all the instruments away! And since I can't sing there's nothing for me to do but spend the rest of the dream frantically searching for something to play. I like my jamming with Hendrix dreams better. :)

Doesn't take a psychoanalyst to work out what these dreams are telling us, does it?

Total good vibes coming towards you from far away in support for the weekend to come, texasguitarslinger. Knock 'em dead, man!

Cheers - C

On the question....The most versatile are multifaceted. If you can do your own vocals, and double on instruments, you have a leg up in a emergency.
Just ask Miami Mike.

It looks like in the worst case scenario I'll make some slight changes to the songs to turn them into instrumentals, with the exceptions of Purple Haze and Sunshine of Your Love. I think I can sing those two. The melodies aren't hard and I've been playing those two songs for about a year or two now, so I don't really have to think about what my hands are doing. I'll just tell the sound guy to turn the vocals down lower than usual. Everyone knows those songs, so even if they don't have the best vocals in the world, people get the point.

I have one possible contact I haven't talked to yet and one maybe for vocals. The good thing is that I have a backup drummer just in case, and I know my bassist won't drop out at the last second.

You can never have too many drummers... they're the ones most prone to spontaneous human combustion, so always travel with a backup!

Sounds like it's shaping up to be a little bit of a baptism by fire, but you're definitely up for the challenge... it's good to see. Should be more players like you around the place... heh.

Great news!!! I have a good, reliable singer and a professional drummer (my drum teacher). So everything's going to be fine and now I just have to worry about learning my part. :D

The praise and worship band I'm in will be playing this Saturday at nine. Which is cool, since I've never played a real night gig before. The cool thing about that band is that it's the first praise and worship band that encourages loud, face melting guitar solos. And my blues/rock band is playing Sunday at about 1:00 pm. Now all I need is a band name.

How about some Cash - I walk the line, Folsom Prison Blues, etc.
