I watched the Queen + Paul Rogers concert DVD last night. I always forget how good of a guitarist Brian May is. He has a style that is very unique. In one song it looked as though he was using a metal pick. Anyone know if this is true? That might explain some of the sound that he achieves.

Paul Rogers has a great set of pipes too. Seem like a pretty good fit for the queens songs although not quite the range as Freddy...........

Hi Beaubs,

Brian May used/uses a sixpence coin, about the size of a dime. It's a unique sound, made it his own. Have a great weekend :D

Brian May is amazing. And don't overlook the songwriting.

I have seen Queen live w/ PR, and I have previously given this a lot of thought actually. Personally, I think Queen would have been much better with Gary Charone on vocals. You can tell that Charone is very influenced by Freddie, and he has the range, singing chops, and the flambouyant stage presence to really sing Queen songs. Further, the new stuff would be more like real Queen, and they would not have to feel obligated to play the (IMO) tired old Bad Company/ Free songs at a Queen concert.

" So these couple of kids come up, who's me and my mate, and say " How do you get your sound Mr. Gallagher ? " and he sits and tells us. So I owe Rory Gallagher my sound" - Brian May

He made his own guitar (The big red one, named Big Red 8) ) with help from his father. Many great guitar players have tried playing his guitar but failed.

But what an awesome guitar player he is.

You don't mean back in the old days?

I saw Queen on the Sheer Heart Attack tour. It was awesome.

Oh, heavens no. I mean as a replacement for Freddie instead of Paul Rodgers. The loss of Freddie is was a horrible thing ... musically and beyond that.

I've always thought that George Michael would have been the best replacement for Freddie. His voice is very similar and he, too, has a real stage presence. Michael did a song ("Somebody to Love," I think) for the Freddy Mercury tribute concert at Wembley Stadium several years ago and it sounded fantastic.

You had me worried that you meant better then Freddie Mercury.

We know that Brian May is no slouch in the science department, having finally returned to and completed the pursuit of his Ph.D. in Astrophysics after putting "Queen" aside. Here's a tad of an anecdote to muddle over while contemplating the road not taken.

A former colleague of mine, English, related an encounter concerning a social event overseas, years ago, during which the conversation led around to career choices and the pursuit of same. The individual so engaged by my colleague had unburdened himself of a tale as to how he aquiesced to his mother's insistence that he leave his work with a struggling rock band and devote his time and attention to full-time studies which she felt offered better 'insurance' to a future.

The band he left,became "Queen".

I do not know the name of this individual but I would not be surprised if he and Pete Best, among others, (like the likes of those whom Jeff Beck lifted a finger to last week) didn't get together once a year and get stinking drunk.

Brian May actually stole the coin idea from Billy Gibbons.

Doubt it. 8) A coin has substituted for a guitar pick in my pocket since I began playing  That waaaaay predates both May and Gibbons.

Really? I thought it bit the big one.

I think the only vocalists that came across well were Robert Plant--who no longer seems to have the same range--which age will do to you) and Gary Cherone. (This is in reference to the ones that sang Queen songs.)

A few others did okay, but most fell flat.

I remember thinking Gary Cherone would be a good replacement if they wanted to continue, or Brian May could join Extreme.

But Paul Rodgers gives them a new feel, and I don't think that's a bad thing. And "All Right Now" is a classic song.

If you're all talking about the same concert I'm thinking of then it seemed to me Annie Lennox was just about the only person who managed to hit all of Freddie's top notes.

Mind you, Queen touring with Annie Lennox. Hmm. Nah, I'm not seeing it...

Cheers - C

When one considers Freddie Mercury in the context of the band, you cannot but avoid the impact of his charisma. Replace Mick Jaggar with Prince and tell me you still have 'The Rolling Stones" :?
