hello everyone! a couple of months back me and three friends started a band, originally just for plain fun. I opted to playing the drums simply because I have a drum set that my brother used to play on. I have been playing guitar for five years now and just recently purchased my first fender, a MIM Lefthand telecaster in midnight wine (and I love it!) Now that we are beginning to play gigs around town I would obviously love to play my tele but am restricted to playing drums i never learned to play properly. our band includes two guitarists, a bassist and me and we don't know anyone willing to replace me on drums. How should I go about this situation??

I don't know much about the Swiss music scene, but from what I do know, I'd find some female blonde drummer and join her band. 8)

Assuming the band doesn't have any commitments yet. having an honest talk with the others and then leaving is probably best. If you do have gigs, think of it more as a job and give the rest say 30 days to find another drummer while you ease out.

On the other hand, if your band is already catching on and you're a key part of the sound, you might want to consider side projects. I did that often enough in band days -- I played lead in my working band but did quite a few side projects (mostly jazz) on bass.

I would suggest doing a side project. It sounds like your current band is catching on locally...

or

See if you/your band can write a song with a long guitar solo so you can step away from the drums long enough to get some guiar play.

or

I take it no one else can play drums in the band? Is they can, switch of a song or two.

You can also trie to Shanghai/steal a drummer from other bands. Just scout out bands that haven't made it or are going nowhere, there is always someone who is unhappy about how slowly things are going in their band and might consider changing a band if they believe it will increase their changes of getting better gigs.

A lot of bands have started this way. F.ex. Korn, Munky and Head heard Jonathan Smith sing in a club and after the gig they just walked up to him and asked if he wanted to jam with them and rest is history.

thanks alot for all the advice. we've decided that our rythym guitarist will learn some basic drumming so that we can switch for a song or two 8). this should keep us going for a while!
