This is directed at those of you that do some home recording.

I've been using a Tascam unit, but it died on me (after 6 years) and I was curious as to what else is out there that you are using.

I've been very happy with the US-122L and would want something with the same features and specs at minimum :

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Hi there! I've been using a Line 6 UX-2 audio interface ever since I started doing my own home recordings about a year ago. The specs are pretty similar to your Tascam unit. The actual interface is really simple to use plus you get the gearbox software which provides an unlimited variety of tones to use.

For recording I use Adobe Audition, mainly because it's pretty simple to just pick up, play and record but I know more experienced users will go for Cubase or Sony Acid for more audio editing features. I highly recommend UX-2. It's had no issues for the 1 year I've had it and it looks cool as well :P

Picked it up for $380AUD brand new. I'm sure you could probably get it cheaper over in the states due to newer models coming out.

Thanks, I had been looking at this one as well as the Line6 Pod Farm.

The Line 6 is a nice product. I've been using an Alesis Usb 8 track mixer. It comes with Cubase LE, however I use either Audacity or Cool Edit Pro. Both are, (or can be) free programs that are quite easy to use.

When you use the Alesis USB Mixer into Audacity, can you monitor from the Alesis with cans, so no latency?

Also, is the output of the Alesis just USB or S/PDIF also?

Thanks!

I've been happy with the e=mu 404 interface

I also just bought a Roland MicroBR 4/32v track recorder that seems designed for recording guitar. It has a 1/4 input labeled Guitar, and a 1/8 input for stereo mic/line in, and USB for transferring files to/from a PC.

I've been using a jamlab for USB interface but I don't recommend it for recording. I'm probably going to have to tinker with the settings to change this but it has a slight delay which will drive you nuts when trying to layer guitar parts.

A bad review can be a good review if it helps steer away from trouble.

The delay that you hear is common and called "latency" and is usually caused by your computer's CPU being overworked!

I've got the Lexicon Omega - good sound quality, and I like the features, but my first one had problems and had to go back to the factory under warranty. Seems to have some driver issues, and not alot of online support. Wouldn't be my first choice again.

I've always had real good luck with M audio stuff...I have an older mode hooked to a laptop running Reason as a stand alone..It's strictly for output , but it's clean and punchy.

I'd also look into the Digidesign Mbox 2 with protools le, if i was buying now...just make sure you have computer enough to run it. A little pricer, but top notch audio.

I've heard that there is a big difference between the Omega and Lambda Lexicon interfaces.

My son has the Mbox2 and PT8, but lives an hour away.

I looked at some MOTU and the Edirol ones yesterday. I also started looking at some tube mic pre-s, that I haven't used before.

The Edirol - UA-4FX seems like a good bang-for-the buck ($150) device :

I used to use my M-Audio mobile Pre years ago but later I started using the M-Audio audiophile PCI card :)

I use the Lexicon Lambda which works well for me. It comes with Cubase LE and the Pantheon Reverb plug-in. I don't use the Cubase as the interface isn't all that intuitive and it's a shame the reverb plug-in won't work with most other software. I'm using ACID Pro 7 and Sound Forge 8 to record. I don't know if there is much difference between the Omega and the Lambda aside from the number of inputs/outputs, though, there is a big difference between these units and the no-frills Alpha.

Lexicon has come out with a new, pricier line of USB interfaces called I-ONIX. It makes me wonder how much longer Lex will support the "greeks" since there seems to be no attempt to provide drivers for MS Vista (I'm running xp).
