Hello Bowdiddley,

My brother-in-law, last year started
with a CD course and seems to do well
with it, he really should apply himself more.
It's also good to have someone you can discuss
your questions with.Getting toghether with other players
is also a great thing. Best of luck with your journey.

Cheers.

Online instruction and CD instruction for guitar or any intrument for that matter is not the only instruction that should be utilized. With that being said, they do not hurt either. There are things that only a good instructor can notice watching or listening to you play (or not play LoL) that can help u to grow your musical skill and perception much faster or efficiently. There is a vast portion of a great player that is born from within and does not spawn from any person or element in 'the world that surrounds' them. My suggestion would be to learn and study from as many angles and varieties of learning you can get access to or have time to explore. Of course that includes exposing yourself to the players that greatly inspire you. Work hard, but most of all enjoy it and have fun too, don't overwelm yourself... As my mother once told me: "Don't try to eat an elephant all in one sitting, one bite at a time... little by little."

-Also forget everything I just said and everything you have learned and JUST PLAY! :D

I have used it and continue to use it. Use whatever resources you can to learn.

i think that will a the future, CD, DVD learning, maybe also e-learning together with regular present lesson in a music school.

a music school here in germany offers distance lessons with DVD and support from a teacher for beginners to advanced.

when you learn straigth what is on the CD or DVD then it's ok. If you want to learn other stuff like ear training and play to your fave songs then even not.
or combined both. in general i think that's one way to learn guitar.

cheers :D

I started with CD's and online stuff, but they couldn't answer my questions, nor could they critique my playing. Since I have started taking lessons my playing has improved dramatically. I use CD's, DVD's, and online lessons to augment what I have learned from my instructor. I particularly enjoy Arlen Roths lessons on the Gibson website. 8)

Thanks for the opinions, I plan on taking lessons through a local instructor but I wasn't sure if the CD's and DVD's and online instruction were worth the time.

Thanks again!

I have made more progress as a guitarist and musician after discovering www.guitarcollege.com . They are basically courses on CD with everything explained and played for you. I have the College Starter Pack. Very well done and thought out, easy to understand, great exercises and tips for practice.
