Does anyone attend Berklee College of Music in Boston? Or does anyone know any kind of information about the college?

good school - fairly expensive - that was my direction my junior and senior year in high school years ago, realized at the last minute I didnt wanna be a music teacher, and didnt think a music performance degree in percussion would get me where I wanted to be, so didnt go

You thinking about attending?

Very jazz-oriented school with a good reputation among some, over-rated among others. In the heart of Boston near Fenway Park, very expensive...around $50,000 a year. An alternative would be University of Massachusetts Lowell, which also has a very good music program, a very tough but excellent Sound Recording Technology program (my son is an SRT student there). Around $30,000 a year. 20 mile nw of Boston.

Both prices above are with room and board, but without books.

They sent be a buch of info before I graduated high school and thought about it as well. Seemed a little too bland/by the book for me though.

I'm thinking about it, but everyone seems to mention how expensive it is.

My current bass player teaches there. What would you like to know?

It's a great school.

I was there two weeks ago for the MEIEA conference (music business and entertainment). I also have a friend attending, and he loves it.

If you go to college for music, make sure it's the instrument you want to play forever. I'm a percussion major, and I hate percussion. But it's all I was ever taught, so it was my only choice. If you want to switch to a different instrument, I suggest looking into Onondaga Community College in Syracuse... if you have some experience with what you want to switch to, in two years they'll get you to the same level as the first two years at another school as if you'd been playing for ten.

You won't be able to transfer to Berklee, though - they don't accept music credits from anywhere else.

More than worrying about the cost, think more about what you wanna do when you grow up. That would be my best advice- if you think you wanna go into something music related, research it - talk to some folks that do it for a living- then just figure out what you are wanting to do - I have a mix of friends that went that route, and others that are living their dreams playing music - You dont have to have a music degree to perform - I have friends that our touring musicians in Nashville that makes great money - and on the flip side, I have buddies that have music education degrees, performance degrees and barely make enough money to survive

I've never been, but more than a few guys I know have. All hard core jazz guys. Outstanding school for that, probably one of the best if not THE best in the world. I've been taught by a few different instructors from there at Interlochen, all top level guys. If you have the money and want to dedicate that much to jazz, then you should call them and check out the website to get more info.

On the flipside, I've known guys that didn't go there and just had that natural talent, played with tons of musicians and learned a lot along the way, and were just as good if not better than your average Berklee student. I've also run into Berklee grads that weren't that impressive. Going to a great school does not guarantee musical genius if you don't have the drive and the potential to learn well and apply what you learn. Something to keep in mind.

Depends on you in particular and if you can use all that knowledge (and money) the way you're hoping you can. Not to discourage you, but not everyone can make the best use of that. Just like being a doctor or engineer. Sure you can go to school, but few can really make the best use of that. That's a question only you can answer though...

We have a monthly unplugged jam at a person's residence and my bass player invites his students to these jams and they do learn a lot from their teacher.

Gary Hoey used to hang around the school and offer to pay students to show him what they've learned or so I've heard?
