A couple of years ago Gene came to the Military base I am stationed at to promote his line of cologne / (fragrance) Back-stage Funk, or what ever it’s called. Smells like a manure truck to me.
There was the military (Army) cover band entertaining the crowd while waiting on his arrival.. When Gene arrived instead of meeting the General and his group of flunkies, or heading into the store to sell perfume and autographs, he headed right for the stage, took the guitar from the lead guitarist and played several cover tunes with the band for the crowd. He never once sang, just played rhythm and lead guitar. I would have figured he would have taken the bass but he did not. I was surprised how good of a guitarist he really is, and made that Strat sing.. Until that point I had never really thought him to be much of a musician. I guess sometimes Music isn’t always about music, (heck KISS proves that).
KISS is getting too damn old to be playing 200 shows a year like back in the day and I suspect a great deal of his financial endeavors is mostly a diversion to help occupy his time.
Don’t get me wrong I had always been a KISS fan, but I am sure fired sick of seeing his name and brand on everything already…..on the other side of the coin I commend him. There’s apparently a market for that kind of stuff and people are buying it in droves and lining his pockets; I say you go Gene, beats the hell out of bustin’ your but to make a living. If you cant seem to make any new music might as well make a buck $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

KISS is a party band. they are not there to write the the next great opus.

What they do is crank out tunes they like. It seems a lot of other people like em too. Not every song has to save the world. Personally I hate the 'deep' songs and political ranting of many artists. Even when i agree with the point they are trying to make. What's wrong with having fun? What's wrong with making money?

The personas they had in the 70's were absolute genius. No other rock stars of the time got the kind of exposure they did, while still maintaining their privacy. other guys were getting mobbed, having their clothing and hair ripped off, kiss would just carry out some of the equipment with the crew, and drive away.

I was a kid in the 70's, KISS was probably the first band that grabbed my attention. At 7 or 8 years old I didn't yet have the maturity to really get into Zep, and Floyd. KISS was bigger than life. They were beyond cool.
They scared the crap out of my born again christian aunt.(I think watching her reaction was the sole reason my dad let me cover my walls in KISS (and then other rock,) posters!

KISS probably as much as any other band set me on the road to wanting to be a musician. A little later (when I was 8 or 9) I had to have a series of eye surgeries. I lived in a tiny remotely north town. I mean remote, my cousin who still lives there says its a 8 hour drive to the nearest place to buy men's clothing.(and that's at no cops around highway speed, not speed limit.) My dad got me a personal tape player(not a walkman yet, one of those little flat top dealies, with the big red record button, and the crappy earbud,), and on the advice of the guys in the record shop(dad was strictly 50's rock, and country kinda guy, but he was open minded about what i could listen to,) he got me Zep 4, The Wall, and KISS Alive! So I was hundreds of miles from home, scared and lonely, and listening to those 3 tapes back-to-back-to-back, and tripping on, I would guess, Demerol. I think it changed the coarse of my life. lol.

Out of those albums, and bands, which really shaped my future listening patterns KISS was sure;y the least proficient band. the others were light years ahead of them as far as technique. But KISS was always there to inject pure FUN into the mix. KISS gets no respect, because they were so flashy, and they were by no means virtuosos, but I will take fun bands like KISS over naval gazing boring $@! Coldplay, or Nickelback, any day of the week.

Nothing wrong with good ole stupid 'Rock and Roll.'

Well, not quite to that extent.

I guess this is like a lot of other bands where the generation you're a part of can have a different effect on you.

Love him or loathe him, ya gotta give him props! He's lived the dream to the max. Playmate wife, tons of women, total rock n roll machine in the best rock band ever and money and investments out the wazoo! There are a lot worse ways he could've spent his life!

I can remember being 14 at madison square garden and over the pa came YOU WANTED THE BEST YOU GOT IT, mind blowing show wanted to make me be a rock star,When I was a few years older an older friend of mine came over to jam a bit I was playing ALIVE and he said Mike you know ACE Frehley ISNT REALLY THAT GOOD I got in a hot debate with him and a week or two later I realized he was right, a lot of fast repetative triplets but nothing really groundbreaking but after all these years I have a place in my heart for them they reall were a rock and roll circus and so many top players list them as insperation

I'm a fan of the band, fun songs, not to deep, and an AMAZING show that you can't help but have fun at. That's what it's about for me. The individuals are not really people I think I'd like to meet but as a group it was a blast.

Lots of discussion here about the band, but love 'em or hate 'em they made a ton of money doing what they loved.

I'm just sick of Gene because of how he hocked the KISS logo on everything from perfume to coffee, play some music!!

Anyone see that movie "Role Models"? There's some awesome KISS jokes in there.

I met Gene at a Kiss covention, I was a huge fan, until I saw him yell at a fan because the fan asked why it took over a year to get the Kisstory books out.
At $150 for the book and $100 dollars for the convention ticket in the mid1990's, the fan deserved a little respect.
Then Gene claimed that he could give a person everything that JESUS could, I instatly lost all respect. It is sad because they were a huge part of my life to that point.

I never was a big Kiss Fan, my wife is. Gene endorsing DP, glad I stopped it. "with a KISS of Cherry" what a load of crap. It's sad when you look better with the demon make-up on than without it.
