I've just discovered that whilst sat in my house im only 10 miles from US soil. The university of Evansville bought Harlaxton manor some years ago, and now its classed as American soil. Some years back working on an american airbase i discovered the wonder of cheap levi's only to be charged tax on exiting the base. There's nowhere near the level of control for this place.

Would this be a good way to import guitars into england or am i asking for a custodial sentence?

Yeah, you get a good price then get blasted with taxes trying to get it back. International Customs thing. Just like driving over to Canada over here in Detroit, getting some good deals, then getting kicked in the teeth with taxes when you come back across the border.

My wife and I bought some carpets in Turkey. They claimed the price included shipping and import taxes. When we got home it turned out it was true - we nearly died of shock!

The carpets got home before we did too, and we were only gone a fortnight. And the price paid was still only a fraction of the cost at home for the same thing.

Now if only I could work out how to perform that trick with guitars...

Cheers - C

If you get someone there to go along with you, importing the guitar and then selling to you , without paying the duty, and/or excise fees(doubt any school shops will, anyway,) and you get caught, you could be charged as a smuggler. I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of any customs and revenue agency of any country.

Now theres a job title i could wear with pride. I'd even change my house name to jamaica inn.

Dont pay the fine, do the time is my motto in those circumstances.

The book isnt a bad read either.

What you could do--and I'm certainly not advocating this--is to drive up to RAF Digby near Lincoln and befriend a US servicemember. Unlike the university, military bases use the Military Postal Service, which costs no more than sending mail within in the US. Your new GI friend could order a guitar for himself from a US company. If he then decided to give you that guitar as a gift, there wouldn't be anything wrong with that. Of course, you might be so happy to get this gift that you would be inspired give him a gift in return--say, $1000 cash. As long as your friend doesn't give too many gifts like this, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Ah. I thought you just wanted one or two guitars for yourself. Unfortunately, setting up a business through the Military Postal Service would be illegal. Believe me when I say you do not want the Postal Inspectors on your tail!
