I've been shopping for overdrive pedals and don't want to sound like I don't know what I'm talking about...

I know in Spanish it would be "ee-BAHN-ess".

So when speaking English (at a US guitar shop) would it be:

"IBB-a-nezz"
or
"ibb-AH-nezz"
or
"EYE-bah-nezz"

or something else?

Wikipedia says the pronunciation is /ˈaɪbænɛz/ (eye-ban-ez).

It's Eye-ban-ezz. but you could avoid the whole conundrum by just saying I want a 'Tubescreamer' or to be ultra hip a TS-808(TS9 is OK, but not the ultra cool original)

To be honest, my Eye-Ban-Ezz Toob Skreemer is really the only pedal I have in my chain anymore. I have had it for 25 years or so. Since I don't play in bands anymore I have all the others in a box. i break out my Crybaby Wah once in a while, but I mostly play clean, or with the tubescreamer. It'll sound great with your strat, and that sweet bassman. If I lived in a place I could crank way up, I would probably only rely on my amp's natural overdrive, but the Ts sounds great for lower volumes for sure.

It's always been "eye-ban-ez" here in Australia... I'm not sure why a Spanish-sounding name for a Japanese product should fail to conform to the conventions of either language, but then again if there's a way to mangle a word Aussies will find it. OI-bin-airs, mate!

Eye-ban-ezz it is then.

Now, any more votes for 9 vs 808?

It was originally Salvador Ibáñez, made in Spain. They were imported to Japan in the early 1900s. When the Ibáñez workshop was destroyed, the importer bought the name and began producing their own instruments.

So, pohatu, with that tilde there, you're saying we didn't even have the Spanish right? (ee-BAHN-yez)

"ugly green one" is sounding like a better and better pronunciation...
