I know the iPOD is the one to have, but I've seen some good ones made by Sandisk and other manufacturers with 1 and 2GB memory.

Any other recommendations ? (2GB is sufficient)

Thanks in advance.

IMHO theres no such thing as a good alternative player to the iPod now, they're all just clones, most of 'em not doing any better job.

I have an iRiver HP120 which is over 3 years old now - that was when they were still decent DAPs on the market other than the 'pod.

I still use my iRiver, it's useful for so much :D

Anyway, yeah sandisk make some neat wee players as do sony but I've heard their software is awful. iRiver I'd avoid nowadays - they're mostly all tied to windows media player (this makes me a saaaad panda). iAudio and Toshiba are also recommended.

Make sure you get some good headphones too ;)

I avoid listening to MP3's as much as I can. The sound quality is so low.

i have a creative zen vision:m. it's awesome. much better than an ipod. it plays videos, records radio and voice, has a radio and many more. (sorry if i sound like a infomercial :P ) but it may be too big for you- it has thirty gb (or 60 if you upgrade)

for you i'd recommend anything by creative labs or i'm sad to say apple.

you could get the new ipod touch, which is an iphone without the phone for only a few hundred for 8GB  but it does look very nice and comes with wi-fi and youtube built in, although i have no idea if you'd use it or not

I picked up this one today...with the FM Tuner...and capacity for 500 songs...I think it'll be just fine. (I got the 2 yr warranty for a few bucks-just in case).

I just got a Sansa e280R, 8 Gb, gets FM and records voice for just $149. Very happy with it. Used it on a plane ride from Fla to CT because those on-board entertainment systems just aren't reliable. My idea of Hell: 35,000 ft, 5 crying babies and a dead entertainment system.
