Can anyone recommend a decent guitar/bass amp mic? My bassist and I started recording/producing and making demos for local bands back in 01. After high school was over, we went off to colleges and hadn't done it in a while. Now, we set up a studio/rehersal area in my basement where our band records and practices. Friends form other bands come over and jam with us, and one of the band members was so impressed with the demo he unknowingly cut, he asked us to record his band.
Sorry for the story, but it helps to know... right? :)

Currently, we've been using specifically mounted and place Sp1's, which are quite good for the price, but not the best for excellent quality recordings. Can any of you recommend a good (reasonably priced) instrument/amp mic or set? Looking roughly $300 +/- per mic.

The classic guitar amp mic is a Shure SM57 which can be had brand new for $100 ea. Every decent studio has a bunch of them on hand.

Another vote for the Shure SM57 on the amp(s), and Shure SM58 for vocals.

To get the Zappa sound, you need a Telefunken U-47. 8)

I asked a friend of mine the same question about mics. He was a Nashville studio player and played with a couple of top bands in the 70s. He said he's used a bunch of them and his choice was the Electro Voice PL35 Tom/Snare mic. I'm now looking to get one to replace my SM57. Not knocking the 57 but just because it's an industry standard doesn't make it the best choice for me.

However, the EV is only around $125 so knowing your budget, I'd seriously consider the Sennheiser MD421.

Good point. I've never had any luck micing a bass. I usually run i right into the board. My brother has a really nice SWR with XLR balanced line out, so it loves being recorded.

Yah, you can use the e 902 for bass , that one will cath nicely all the low frequencies... :)

For higher frequencies, you should stay with the SM-57. They are quite cheap and are absolutely mind-blowing value for money.

I recorded $@!'s harps (okay, I see there's a built-in censor there, did not mean to offend anyone, the instrument Maultrommel or 'trump' is called that way in common English) (they tend to produce frequencies of a guitar and the character of a distorted/overdriven one) with an SM-57 and it turned out to be great. :)

Thanks a lot guys. I was leaning towards the Sure's to begin with, but I may have to check out the Sennheisers.

Strangely enough, the Nady's work really well recording the bass, but most Hartke's pick up well anyway. Thanks again guys.

I like the Sm 57 and 421 dynamics mics for electric, and an AKG 451/2 condenser for acoustic - unless you happen to stumble across a Neumann Km84 in some pawn shop somewhere...in that case , let me know...
