Take it off. It's going to start lifting around the edges and bubbling up anyway so you might as well get rid of it before it looks ragged.

It's not going to help anything to keep it on, though. It's going to start peeling on it's own after a while and will look very messy.

I'm pretty bad myself. I just took the plastic off the tuning keys on my American Fender Jazz after owning it for 4 weeks and gigging with it 5 or 6 times! I was only half serious about keeping it on but I know how I am and my bass will not be pristine all too soon so I just delay the inevitable. During rehearsal last night I ceremoniously removed the plastic from the tuning keys. Maybe I'll get around to the pick guard next week. Still holding on.

Don't know what adhesive is used to hold the plastic film to the pickguard.
I'd worry that maybe over time it might harden up and make removing it really difficult.

I use my guitars a lot and any protective plastic film would end up getting torn to shreds in no time anyway :)

The plastic will damage the tone of your guitar

I don't know about that. I don't think it has sufficient density or mass to have any effect on anything.

I took the plastic off of my FIRST brand new strat yesterday. I wanted to get it completely off, so I was taking each screw out individually to get all the plastic out from each one. Long story short, I removed a pickup screw completely. Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

The positive is that I learned how a strat comes apart and how to put it back together. :?

Note this thread of problems with the glue used for the film on a 2 year old American Standard.

The only reason to leave the plastic on the pickguard would be if you did not like it and wanted to take it back. My local store will take a guitar back and give a refund up to ten days after purchase as long the guitar is in the same condition that you bought it in. IE plastic on the pickguard.

As far as removing the plastic (I've removed many) just loosen the screws around the pickguard and peel around them slowly. If you remove the tone and volume knobs and loosen the nut under it you can do the same thing. Remember to tighten everything back up when you finish.
