I have yet to take off the plastic on my new Fender's pickguard and backplate. As a new owner this is probably a stupid question  ...but there's no permanent protective value to it right? I should take it off?

However.......wouldn't you spend more for the guitar with the plastic on it than the guitar without it? Just a thought. I'm leaving mine on because, what does it hurt?

I would never leave the plastic on take if of!!!! This just show the difference between those who want to have a guitar thats pristine and new looking and others want one that looks like it been draged down the road. Play it an enjoy don't even worry about the pickguard remember new ones are only 20.00 and the cover on the back you will find in time it won't even be on there it will be in the case.

The plastic film protects the guitar, as long as it is properly in place. Playing your guitar will disturb the plastic. if you trap any dust between it and the pickguard it will work like sandpaper.

It is only there to protect your guitar during shipping. it will hurt your guitar if you keep it on.

See that is what I was wondering. Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread...it's my first guitar and I want to do right by it. Plastic is coming off!

Yes, I think it's best that you take the plastic off. It's better for your guitar and it also shows that you and your guitar are on this journey together--aging side-by-side. :P

When I got my first guitar, I thought the plastic that was coming off of the pickguard wasn't supposed to come off.
One of my fellow classmates told me in our lesson one night, "You know, that plastic comes off."
"Yeah, I know," I said cooly, looking down at the curled-up-at-the-edge plastic. Didn't want to seem like a newbie, after all....

I took the plastic off a few weeks after that. Still can't reach those little bits of plastic trapped beneath the volume and tone pots, though. 8)

So I'm not the only one to think this! :D 8) That is totally what I thought when I opened the case earlier.
