I have heard a couple of sayings about the guitar:
1. It's an easy instrument to fake it with. You just need to learn a couple patterns.
2. The guitar is the non-musician's instrument.
Before you all get bent out of shape, the sayings do have some validity. I was playing licks, riffs and chords and had no idea why they worked, just that they did. I have played for over 30 years (can't believe that long!) and until a couple of years ago was self taught. I suppose I am still self-taught, I haven't gone to an actual instructor but I did find a great mail order program from www.guitarcollege.com. The theory I've learned to this point, and it is geared toward guitar, has made playing much easier and enjoyable now that it makes some sense to me.
I know this was just a simple question but I thought I'd give my 2 cents worth while I was at it. Thanks

I'm completely self-taught as well, and have been playing for 4 years now. As long as you are motivated enough to continue practising and learning, you should be fine.

Here's a vid of me and my 07' strat:

Another self-taught guy here. :) I have some really basic knowledge in music theory thanks to the music lessons at school but other than that, I do stuff in my way.

Not sure where I am because of this but the point is, I enjoy playing and I'm excited every time I pluck a string. :)

I am self taught. I cannot read and play music with my guitar. I can use tab music. I learn mostly by ear however. I take what I need or cannot figure out from the tableture when learning a song.

I do recommend lessons to any new player.

Me too, totally self taught. I learned back in the 60's from records and books. I did have some formal music trailing in high school, in vocals but no instruments, but since I was left handed no guitar teachers would give me a chance unless I learned righty. I have a cousin that is lefty too but he did the righty thing just so a teacher would take him on. In the end I was the better player of the two of us so self taught is just fine by me...

I'm Kinda Self-Taught. I learned the Basics of Music playing in the Middle School and High School bands. Beat's, Note Values, Time Signatures, and Key Signatures. But the Guitar I learned from watching my Dad and playing with friends. I took 3 lessons from a friend who wasn't really a guitar teacher, but a Great Jazzer. He showed me my Scales and how to improvise. But ost of my Guitar knowledge comes from Guitar MAgs, Books, and other guitarists.

Music is a Gift, Pass it on, Teach what you know.
