bro , if you are playing you're all good . when you are ready for some lessons you will know and then get them at that time . all of the posts on here are right on , the practice as much as possible ones i would add that you should keep your guitar in sight at all times that helps because you will play more then .

At one period in my guitar playing life I was self taught ... then I went to music school but I actually learned alot by myself my instructor back then told me he couldnt teach me more of what I already knew technically so he focused on tons of theory which was good tooo they go hand and hand :)

IMO, there's nothing wrong with either method. I've never taken lessons on anything, started on drums and did that for 15+ years. Than in early 90's I sold the drums and got a bass, now in the last 5 years I picked up a 6 string acoustic and went from there.

I suppose that in many areas having a teacher would be beneficial, for technique etc. But I'm able to mostly do what I'd like to do so it's all good.

Playing is supposed to be fun so whatever works for you, might not work for someone else.

Nothing wrong with being self-taught if you keep your eyes and ears open. My brother showed me a couple of chords in 1968 and then off I went. I played my first gig a year later. When I think back on it, I can't believe how much I learned in the first year. No way do I make that kind of progress now, LOL. There was nothing available in terms of reference materials compared to what you have now, and guitarists tended to be very secretive. So you had to figure everything out on your own. I watched every guitarist on TV that I could, no matter what the style. It's too bad there is very little music on TV now.

'Bought a cheap Harmony electric at 16 and 'been joyously picking since. There may have been time and money somewhere along the line to do so, but none was ever invested in formal lessons or study of music theory. There was always "other stuff," job, kids, return to university, family crises....

That said, 'would likely be a better or at least more flexible player if formal education had been sought.

I'm learning right now from Garageband '09. But I'm also on a teachers waiting list but until then it's Garageband.

I'm planning to pretty much teach myself using books, CDs, DVDs, and Justin Sandercoe's lesson site.

I love Justin's site--figured out how to finger tap the first time trying to do it from watching the video he had on it. Took me about three minutes to tap quickly. It was awesome. :D
I go back and learn from his site frequently, as well, so it's been a lovely discovery. :P

I started out being self-taught, but I never really got anywhere until I started taking lessons at my local YMCA. Ever since then I've been self-teaching myself as well as taking lessons from a Berklee graduate. (And I have to say--I look forward to my lesson every week. :) Absolutely love it.)
I also practice everyday, and like you'll hear everywhere, practice makes perfect.

My Dad started teaching me when I was about 10. He is an awesome player - was asked by Chet Atkins to record an album with him but was in the military and something came up to make him cancel, think Mark Knoffler ended up getting the gig. Unfortunately my parents got divorced a year or 2 later so been learning on my own for the past 30 years or so. I did have a banjo teacher for awhile and think I learned faster than I would have on my own. Still considering taking guitar lessons - only so much you can learn on your own. I teach friends what I know and learn what they know from them, but structured lessons from a real teacher would help.
