I got into metal at my friends 16th birthday. It's all they (he and his other friends) were playing, and apperently metal grows on you.

Blues music? or any other genre of music you stumbled upon and started to like?

I discovered the blues through Jimi Hendrix. It was his cover of the song Killin' Floor that led me to Howlin' Wolf and from there, the rest is history.

I think I was the only kid at my high school who was really into blues music. :D

Personal I found "the blues" through a dear old friend of mine (who I still stay in touch with). Without going into too much detail, in my early years I really wanted to play "rock music" which at that time constituted bands like The Beach Boys, The Shocking Blue, The Four Seasons, Elvis Presley, etc...stuff that most folks today would consider as "oldies". In my late teens when I started to take guitar more seriously and got into my first "real" band, the other guitar player in the band, George Sayer was a hard core blues guy. The band was actually classic rock for the most part but George had introduced me to the blues and showed me how so much of the music I listened to and loved had evolved from the blues. He not only shared his love of this music with me but he also helped me to build a foundation for my own music and my own style of playing based on that.

Now I should mention that my friend George is what I consider to be the quintessential guitar player. His only desire in life is to play his music and play it for others. He is also the kindest, most generous person I have ever known...he would literally give the shirt off his back for a friend and as a guitar player I owe a great deal to him...the best term I can really think of is "mentor". He showed me what it is to be a guitar player and a musician and he did that in part through his love of the blues.

While my music has gone in a different direction than his and I really am more of a classic rock guitar player now (even with my originals), I am still firmly rooted in the blues...and my dear old friend is over in Luxembourg now and still plays the blues wherever he can for whomever he can.

Sorry if that all sounds a bit sappy but it's true :D.

Peace,
Jim
