As an attempt to use existing equipment - and the never ending search for "tone". Can I try using my Marshall 9000 Preamp into the clean chanel on my Fender Quad Reverb? Sometimes it's nice to hear that Marshall Crunch.

Is this safe? What are your recommendations??

Thanks

As long as you watch the level settings preamp into preamp is ok. It never sounds good though, theres too much eq'ing going on. If you want to use the preamp into a regular combo or head its better to plug the output of the preamp into the effects return of the regular amp with the guitar going straight into the preamp. You bypass the preamp of the regular amp that way and just access the power amp section of your regular amp.

I dont think you've got a effects loop on your regular amp though. Sorry.

Why with your rack are you looking to do it? I cant see it benefiting you in any way. The quad looks a loud amp so unless your playing at ear bleeding volume your unlikely to get much benefit of the poweramp section.

I was just curious if I could get the Marshall "crunch" or a similar sound out of the Fender

I honestly think the marshall crunch has more to do with the way the high mids of marshall amps interact with those celestion speakers which are quite mid focused too. 6L6'd vintage fender amps just are not design'd for that sound. Its possible to get close but i think you may be better off buying a cheap el34/kt66 based poweramp if you dont already have one.

Nice amp btw. 8)
