Hey guys, lately I've really gotten into surf rock (can you blame me? :D) but anyway, I'm practicing tremolo picking and have really been suffering in the arm and shoulder. Anyone have any tips to reduce fatigue while tremolo picking? Or any tremolo picking tips in general? Thanks my brothers in boogie, my fratelli in Fender!

uh, yeah, it's hard to put it more succinctly than that!

Anything I know about tremelo picking stems from my knowledge of classical/flamenco tremelo playing... I'm not the smoothest out there by a long shot, but I can keep going forever. The principle is the same, and I don't have much trouble translating it to a pick instead of alternating fingers.

It's natural to tense up as you get more into your tremelo picking, but you have to fight that. Don't hold the pick too tightly, as it'll make your whole arm cramp up eventually. You only need to be moving that thing across an arc of a couple of millimeters, so no need to expend any more energy than is required to do just that. If you try twisting your wrist like you were turning a door knob, that's the movement. If you do it without the pick, your hand should look like it's quivering on its wrist without any other part of your arm being involved.

I find that any up/down strumming movement -- no matter how slight -- gets too much of the forearm in on the act, and once that happens you'll get tension accumulating.

Jazz picks are great for trem picking, if you're into using Jazz Picks that is...well...they help me some, anyway. Ah, just a suggestion though. :lol:

You could also gain some arm and wrist muscle doing weights if you depelope more muscle that will reduce your fatigue by a mile....

s13 , thanks for the link the guy in the vid echo'd all of the posts so far , sm using your hand and wrist only for the style should work perfectly.
