From http://www.thisdayinmusic.com

April 5th 1994, Kurt Cobain committed suicide by shooting himself in the head at his home in Seattle. Cobain’s body wasn’t discovered until April 8, by an electrician who had arrived to install a security system, who initially believed that Cobain was asleep, until he saw the shotgun pointing at his chin.

A suicide note was found that said, "I haven't felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing . . . for too many years now". A high concentration of heroin and traces of Valium were found in Cobain’s body. His death was officially ruled as suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

I have never been a fan of Nirvina, nor have I ever thought much of Cobain’s writing, singing, or guitar playing. That being said he did seem to inspire many to their masses and did sell a lot of records….. I Just can’t imagine the amount of turmoil a person has to be under to take their own life. My thought do go out to his family, friends, and fans on this day of remembering…..I do agree it’s hard to belive it’s been 15 years, seem like yesterday I heard it on the news……

I was a fan. After too many years of the radio being dominated by stuff like Jesus Jones, I was one of those who, the very first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit on the car radio, had to pull over to the side of the road and listen to it. It brought rock back, after too long away. I listened to the Nevermind album again just recently, and there's not one bad song on it (IMHO), which back then and to this day is rare.

Whatever happened since - Grunge rising up and flaming out quickly, Courtney living her life however, Dave Grohl moving on to bigger things - it still makes me sad.

Vale, Kurt.

Teen Spirit was a great song that broke up the whole happy/modern metal sound that was lingering on WAY too long to finally die. A lot of good music came after that song was released (Pearl Jam, STP, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc).

As a musician/writer, he was ok. There were a lot like him in Seattle (and other places) doing the same thing. He did something right, got noticed, and was the first to break out big with that sound.

He'll be remember for all that, and he should be. Tragic that he was so depressed with all that he had going for him.

what a shame........ya know here was a guy that came and broke out of the 80s hair metal era and gave a whole new rock 'n roll era: Grunge. Such good music came from that time period. I can honestly say that the people who look a Kurt Cobain as a hero are just plain stupid. People who view that way are usually the emo no-one-understands-me kids who dont appreciate good music. I dont view Kurt Cobain as a hero, maybe another good guitar player and songwriter but thats it. I just find myself saying "Wow 15yrs went by that quick!" Even tho im 16 and didnt really appreciate music 'til i was 13 i still find it amazing how time flies.

As a 27 year old (the age he was when he died) I can clearly remember hearing it on the radio when I was 12 as we were in the car going back to Scotland to visit family after moving to Ireland 6 months previously.

As a dyed in the wool Guns N' Roses fan my opinion of Kurt personally has always been somewhat derogatory as his whining about other bands got quite annoying at times.

Artistically though he was obviously an accomplished songwtriter and Nevermind is amazing and I still listen to their Mtv Unplugged to this day.

I sometimes wonder however why someone who hated fame and being in a band would choose to do it for a living and continue doing it.

For a guy who called Guns N' Roses 'a bunch of junkies with no talent' its ironic that hes been dead 15 years and Slash and Izzy are revered as guitar heroes by the youth of today and that Dave Grohl has become just what he hated.

Weird.

I enjoy Nirvana, and think he was a talented song writer, but that's about it. The one thing that he did that was great, was make it possible for a lot of new music to emerge from the grunge and post-grunge era. Some of the great later 90's and todays bands were made possible because of Nirvana. To me, that's worth something.

I remember hearing the news for the first time, it was a pretty crappy day. I've always enjoed the music he made even though it be simple and full of intentional contraditions it is pretty darn good.
