For years now I've heard reference to John Mayer being something of a guitar protege, but had personally associated him the the pop fluff that gets the most air time. I just didnt see it.

Even with all the Mayer related threads here in the forums. I still didnt get it. I'd just glance at the thread and think "Meh, top 40 teen fluff" But then I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqdkpCVb ... e=relatede while looking for some different takes on Voodoo Chile.

So let me now go on record as having stated that I was wrong... Mayer has some serious mojo.

Im right there with ya all thumbs - I was never a fan at all, and never gave him much of a chance, but have watched a lot of stuff here lately on YOUTUBE of him - he can play - I still have problems getting past that !@$ song, "Your Body is a Wonderland" - and his facial expressions, while he sings kinda reminds me of a low functioning child trying to eat a mouth full of laffy taffy! JMO

However, I still kinda roll my eyes when people put him in the same ranks as SRV and Jimi

I thought he was lame, but his trio stuff is quite good. The defining moment for me was when he was on Chapelle's Show and they did the "effects of rock music on white people". That was too funny.

There's a lot of misconceptions out there about JM. The problem is that he really restrains himself on his albums, so people get the wrong idea about him and aren't mobilized to go to his shows, but his shows are where he does all his handywork. He's kind of a blues/pop crossover, but the blues hide until the shows. And he puts on a damn good show.

But then you have the people on the other hand who have the wrong idea. He is not God's latest gift to the world. I think he's incredibly talented, but some people make really bold statements about him when they try to defend him, and it just winds up the Hendrix/SRV lovers who are ready to do battle.

Regardless, people think he's a sappy pop writer who puts on a Hendrix face every once in a while, but I've had the opportunity to meet him and I can tell you first hand that he is truly passionate.

Anyways, not to get too deep into the debate here, so I'll throw out a video that I enjoy. An interesting take on Everyday I Have the Blues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weYO0v4w ... re=related

the guy is talented but to me his playing sounds manufactured it looks like he is trying to be srv but he doesn't have that kind of talent and probably never will. Ive watched a lot of his trio stuff on youtube and I'm still not that impressed with him. i think kenny wayne would take him down and Joe Bonamassa is way better than both of them. here in eastern iowa we have a local guitar player by the name of butch satterfield that would toast mayer when kenny wanye played here in cedar rapids iowa about 7 years ago butch was going to open for kenny untill kenny found out how good butch was and said he couldn't open for him true story butch even auditioned for the red hot chile peppers when jon freaked out. not bragging just saying i think mayer is good but over rated

He's seriously over rated. I've heard better on open mic nights in Philly. He is funny to watch though, and he always seems to impress the teeny bopper girls. I'm not getting into a debate or argument over my statement. It's just my opinion, feel free to like him and buy his stuff. :D

Personally I think he's way overhyped as a guitarist and to be honest, he's becoming more famous for who he's dating rather than his musicial ability.

He hates that he gets hyped for his love life, he has mentioned it at most of his live performances, And as a guitarist he really is something else it just requires you to really sit an watch him in a un-biased State of mind

Im not being a over protective John Mayer Fan here its just Yes he has made some songs that are less desirable to us as guitarists but those made him the money he needed to now show us his true Guitarist colours.

I've seen him play alongside Clapton,B.B king And Buddy Guy, They love his playing ,so clearly there is something in him.

Best of luck to all :D

Yeah man i totally agree.....i listened to his live album Where the Light Is (which if you havent heard it get it) and he sounds like SRV, his vocals and guitar playing are phenominal he should in the R 'N R Hall of Fame instead of freakin RUN DMC or Madonna

I used to despise JM in the same way I despise teeny bopper pop -- the radio, more or less. Then a friend of mine lent me his live CD "Try!" and I was hooked. I still don't care for more than a handful of his studio cuts, but his live stuff is amazing. Check this out, for example; it's another Hendrix cover that is well executed and entertaining:

Mayer is pretty damn good. Then again, there are a lot of slingers that are pretty damn good. The difference is that he blew up on the pop scene, which unfortunately places a stigma on serously good musicians. Then he had to work his way backwards to shed his glam heartthrob status and showcase his talents as a real musician.

In any case, he's a modern day troubador, and the chicks love him. Which automatically makes the guys hate him, and I'm still pissed because Jennifer Aniston is not returning any of my calls now. EVEN after I mastered the first part of Little Wing.

But you really can't blame the guy for being such a tabloid sweetheart. He's dating beautiful actresses, buying whatever he wants, and playing his own music for a living! For those of us that bust our asses trying to get our music noticed, isn't that the ultimate (if unobtainable) goal??
